MD600,
You sure thats an ex-AAC Gazelle? Skids don't seem right.

Here is a picture of what 241 ex irish air corps looks like now.
Many Gazelles look like this ...
some like this ...
and others like this ...
Zishelix explained that the 'orange box' was a sand filter. So what is the 'yellow box' above. 600 made reference to an 'intake muffler' - is that what it is and, if so, what does it do?

As defence cuts bite, military hardware is a tempting proposition - and might be more affordable than you think.
... and the company that deals with selling all of it is Witham Specialist Vehicles.
The company has been in business for more than 30 years and since 2002 has been the sole sales and marketing agent for all British MoD vehicles. Its task is to sell as efficiently and profitably as possible so as to ensure the best possible return to the public purse.
Of course, it isn’t just the relatively ordinary that Witham deals with. Taking up the final third of the hangar are no fewer than 30 Gazelle helicopters. Some are missing engines, even canopies, while others are more or less fully functional. “This is the kind of thing we’d ideally like to sell as one lot to a big buyer, but you just never know.

The yellow highlighted box is indeed a muffler as 600 has correctly pointed out. It is used to reduce engine intake noise and it also acts as a direct replacement for the standard intake grid by protecting the engine from ingestion of foreign material. The muffler is becoming more common on civi gazelle's these days. There's only a small power limitation when using the muffler that would only take affect when operating hot and high. I am uncertain as to the possibility of the muffler being used as an anti icing shield but it is recommended when flying in falling snow to use the regular grid, otherwise you are limited to 1hr intervals of flying time.
ZS-X,thanks for the pics of the filter; I wondered if the `muffler` had any form of filtration in it or not,but it seems unlikely. XW276 was a development aircraft,as you can tell by the doors and the roof canopy,We did a lot of the initial handling trials for radios, roping, winching, flares, paratrooping, and general handling up to `73,then it got `left behind` as it couldn`t be modified to production standard. If you look at `Rotorheads around the world ` page 15 ,there`s a pic of XW846,dressed up in skis and icing trials gear in Canada. That was the last Gazelle I flew,on 23Dec `76...but I`m open to offers !!!!

Unfortunately, I'm not able to offer you a ride in Gazelle but I'll gladly sent you pics of the birds you flew back in the 1970s & '80s... if you're interested, of course
.

Thanks Savoia! I really enjoy reading & looking such things, but not sure if the rest of visitors are interested in "ancient Gazelles". Maybe we should open a new thread?
No need for a new thread.
This one is for all things Gazelle. It's become a very useful source of information, conveniently in one place.
