QDM vs QDR
Always get these 2 mixed up! which is which again, and any good ways to remember.
Got a sim check coming up soon. |
For QDM and QDR I go alphabetical, so they end up:
QDM QDR QDM is the starting point, aircraft to the station and magnetic. QDR is the station to the aircraft and magentic. I visualize: QDM --------> QDR <------- Are you set on QTE, QUJ? |
I initially tried to remember the difference by saying that the aircraft flies a magnetic heading so qdM is Magnetic to the station. This didn't always work cause I found it to easy to think magnetic from the station. Now I remember the R for radial, which is radiating out from the centre, i.e. from the station. So far so good.

This sounds ridiculous written down but:
QDM - M Makes you go home/Mothers you...ie towards the station (and M for magnetic too) QDR - R Rejects you...pushes you away..ie away from the station. Not the slickest answer you'll see on here but I had to work it out myself..and I aint that slick.:ok: |
Alternatively, forget all this 'Q' code stuff, and simply request a 'Steer'. ;)

What's wrong with 'bearing to...' & 'bearing from....'???
|
Dont laugh it works!
I like to think of a "true" cute atc lady "a cutey" sounds like QTE
Grouped with QDR, R for radio station amg from. QUJ the completly useless one that no one seems to know what its used for! QDM- M for magnetic. Strange but true I never get confused. |
