Laser beam for clear ice detection

A few months ago I overheard a collegue of mine referring to his laser beam pen-like device which he said he uses for ice detection . I was in a hurry and really busy and got absorbed in my job forgetting the event . Now I'm reading some stuff in the cold weather operations chapter and I remembered the event and I'd like to know if these laser beam devices are in common use for clear ice detection , and how effective they are. Is it something that works equally good in day time as in night time ?

Sounds interesting, why don't you try it and report back?
