Part-FCL Differences Training & Type Rating Renewal

Hi all...

I have been looking in Part-FCL for guidance on what must be covered during differences training between different variants of public transport aircraft, which share a common type rating. I could only find the following reference, which is somewhat vague.

GM1 FCL.135.A; FCL.135.H

DIFFERENCES AND FAMILIARISATION TRAINING

(a) Differences training requires the acquisition of additional knowledge and training on an appropriate training device or the aircraft.

(b) Familiarisation training requires the acquisition of additional knowledge.
I am considering renewing an expired type rating which is a few months inside three years since it expired. I am led to believe that an element of training with a ATO is required and simply 'dusting off the cobwebs' with a TRE, that I have hired on a 'freelance' basis will not suffice?

The guidance on the training required appears to be slightly flexible in that it seems to be recommended rather than mandatory and should be finally evaluated on the applicant's own experience and proficiency. Does this mean that if you can jump in and fly a satisfactory LPC from the word 'Go', then recurrent training is not actually required?

The guidance also mentions the number of 'sessions' that are recommended but what is the exact definition of a session? Could a three circuits in the simulator count as three sessions? It all seems a little vague and open to personal interpretation.

AMC1 FCL.740(b)(1) Validity and renewal of class and type ratings

RENEWAL OF CLASS AND TYPE RATINGS: REFRESHER TRAINING

(a) Paragraph (b)(1) of FCL.740 determines that if a class or type rating has lapsed, the applicant shall take refresher training at an ATO. The objective of the training is to reach the level of proficiency necessary to safely operate the relevant type or class of aircraft. The amount of refresher training needed should be determined on a case-by-case basis by the ATO, taking into account the following factors:

(1) the experience of the applicant. To determine this, the ATO should evaluate the pilot’s log book, and, if necessary, conduct a test in an FSTD;

(2) the complexity of the aircraft; (3) the amount of time lapsed since the expiry of the validity period of the rating. The amount of training needed to reach the desired level of proficiency should increase with the time lapsed. In some cases, after evaluating the pilot, and when the time lapsed is very limited (less than 3 months), the ATO may even determine that no further refresher training is necessary. When determining the needs of the pilot, the following items can be taken into consideration:

(i) expiry shorter than 3 months: no supplementary requirements;

(ii) expiry longer than 3 months but shorter than 1 year: a minimum of two training sessions;

(iii) expiry longer than 1 year but shorter than 3 years: a minimum of three training sessions in which the most important malfunctions in the available systems are covered;

The guidance is pretty specific in section (111) (expiry more than one year but less than 3) and, in addition, " training as recommended " by an ATO. The original question also referred to " common type ratings". The TRE and ATO would be required to evaluate the experience on the type to be renewed, you could not for instance renew a 757 only guy on a 767 with them not having completed the required differences training. If you want a specific answer send the specific question to [email protected]
As for the suggestion a quick whizz around a 2 Hour LPC.. highly unlikely, a " training session" would have to be structured to cover the essential items before the LPC and probably a ground school refresher in addition. I would reasonably expect 2 training sims and an LPC after nearly 3 years without exposure to the type. ( yes it gets expensive) Most airlines have annual technical refreshers and a sound systems knowledge is expected prior to LPC.
