Two Terminology Questions...

Does anyone have any good references that support answers to these two questions?

1) Moving an airplane along the ground is called "taxiing" - Why?

2) Setting a Landplane down in the water is called "ditching" - Why?

I have answers to both questions and they are related to early British flying but I have been unable to locate any validation to my answers. Any ideas?
