EKVG - Faroe Islands

In preparation for my first trip to the Faroe Islands, I would like to obtain some practical information about Vagar airport. Things to look out for, usual weather patterns and other information you can think of.

I have gone through the Jeppesen plates, but I'd like to gain more practical knowledge for my flight. Hopefully there are some Atlantic Airways drivers out there who care to share their knowledge

Nice folks, and pretty quiet op tempo.

Landing to the SE can be a little bumpy, and the winds can whistle down the channel.

Other than that, be sure to check NOTAMS, might be some construction going on that requires extra advance notice.

Go onto the danish AIP site and download the brief on Varga.

Lovely people there and very friendly.

The waterfall approach is really fun to fly and scenery is stunning.

When you look at the turbulency plates thier light is proper light turbulence which the yanks would be screaming for a level change. If it says moderate it really is ruff as hell, head off the roof and struggling to see the instruments.

Usual wx patterns is windy as if its not raining it soon will be.

But don't let me put you off it really is a wonderfull place to visit.

On departure don't be worried about decending after departure and running along to the rocks before banging up IFR if you don't have to climb performance for a IFR departure.

O and always eat fish there.

And the last time I was there the ladys in the airport information were just simply stunning sexy classy ladys.

And the lady in the tower hilarious when her brother started giving her grief on the RT ( he flys one of the local bus service choppers)

And just be a bit canny listening into the procedural approach from Iceland a couple of times they had us pointing at the same point as another aircraft at the same level.

It is many years since I went there, but the worst visit was when the TAF was hopelessly wrong and it went below mins after I passed PNR (Aztec, positioning empty). I actually feared the engines would come off the wings in the turbulence, and it was one of the few occasions I had to sit and shake for a few minutes after parking.

Take note of mad jock's comments on turbulence - I know 'in the old days' SAS sometimes discontinued the easterly ILS down the Fjord due to extreme turbulence . A strong south south-easterly really whips the eddies off the rock pillars.

As said, fantastic scenery, great people. 99% chance you'll enjoy your visit.

And if you fancy a joyride up'n down the fjords be aware of lots of power lines crossing - very hard to see - get a map from the locals!

Sørvágsfjørður frá Vága Floghavn

See if that link works.

Thats the westerly departure.

Vága Floghavn

Apron

Looks quite a nice day there, alot nicer than when I have been there. Mind you I always seemed to go in the middle of winter.

Hmm.. when I checked them first a car was parked on the apron for quite a lot more than 30 secs.

Anyway, fun to see the top of Mykines (island on the fjord pic). In 1980 I spend countless days waiting for the cloudbase to rise above the top so we could move the MY NDB up there.

That must have been a long wait. I don't think I have ever seen the top of it in real life.

There is a time stamp on the top of the pictures. It cycles in my browser anyway.
