De-Icing/Anti-Icing

Question for those experienced in getting de-iced. In a two-step process for ground de-icing/anti-icing most training recommends that anti-icing fluids be applied within 3 minutes of de-icing. Since it usually take more than 3 minutes to de-ice an entire aircraft how is this possible?

You don't de-ice the whole a/c before you start the anti-icing application in such a case - you do it in stages.

Yes, first application.

Obviously its preferable to find a way to shorten the time between that first application and the end of the treatment, but to do so and respect the 3 minute rule would require extra spray units which might not be available.
