Displaced Threshold at Changi 20R

Title says it all. My question is why? Its almost half a mile long even though the approach is over the sea. Am I missing something here? My roster doesn't usually take me there that often but when it does, I feel like I'm hanging in the air for ages on that runway.

It also got me thinking. What is the longest displaced threshold out there? JFK is pretty long too.

I am not sure but the reason for the displaced threshold on 20R might have to do with the possibility of vessels in the sea. Just have a look at the notes regarding climb gradients for the SID for runway 02L. If you use Jeppesen check pages 10-3 and 10-3A.

If my memory serves me right the displaced threshold on Changi 20R is due to the shipping lane which runs past the end of the R/W and is a route for ships going to the Malaysian port of Johore. When ships with a bridge structure higher than a certain figure were due to pass the tower would issue an additional warning and time of passing.

Yup. That was the reason. Have even seen oil rigs up to a few hundred metres being towed past the approach path. In such cases, obviously landing on 20R is stopped and is continued on 20C. Then the rig holds short of 20C and landing on 20C is stopped and continued on 20R. Then the rig continues its journey.
Just wondering, do these barge captains have radio contact with Changi Tower ? Or is there a CAAS AES tug assisting them ?

leewan has answered it correctly. As supplementary information, the full length for the reciprocal direction (02L) is available, subject to "ship crossing" considerations.

Three choices, re-calculate your Takeoff Weight for the "ship" obstacle, wait for the ship to pass, or use Runway 02C.

Hi Guys,

thanks for that. I wrote my message in haste after doing some crude pythagoras and thought to myself that there must be some big F-off ships if you have a displaced threshold at 800m, plus the touchdown zone, plus the distance of said ships from the shoreline!

Presume you are referring to 13R/31L which is almost 15,000ft long. I'm guessing that nothing like that is required for landing so the displacements are there to save money on the surface (which doesn't need to withstand a landing 300t aircraft) - happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.
