Multi Engine IR

Hi

Having not flown for ages and letting my type ratings lapse, I need to get a multi engine IR can anyone recommend anywhere or anyone in the south of England? Does anyone have any suggestions for suitable prep as I'm fairly rusty !!

Thanks

As far as prep goes;

1. Review speeds/power settings/attitudes for the a/craft you will be flying
2. Plan the flight profiles well in advance and rehearse in your mind the route(s) ie speeds, tracks, heights, radio calls, checks
3. Familiarise yourself with the nav kit in the a/craft, on the ground
4. Know all your airborne checks
5. Review your plates
6. Revise procedures for holds, approaches, go-arounds, general handling, partial panel, visual cx

Multi IR training in a/craft is approaching £8-9/minute these days - much cheaper to learn all the above at home, for free.

RE:

best thing you can do before is to get some hours on FNPTII before actual renewal training.

before you renew your me/ir , check if your atpl exams are still in date , ie if you are within the 7 year rule since your last ir check out , if not you will have to do all the atpl exams again if you are aiming for the airlines .
if that is not your aim , luckily you can ignore what I have said

Don't forget as well that for your IR-ME renewal you need your MEP rating valid. If your MEP class rating is not valid you will need to renew your MEP class rating. If your MEP is expired by more than 5 years you have to do all the MEP Course.
For your IR-ME (expired between 1 to 7 years) the renewal course can be different from ATO.

You will have:
MEP Course : 6 hours of flight + ground school
IR-ME renewal : 2 simulator sessions + 1 IFR flight+ Test flight.

On your MEP course you have a navigation. You can ask to use it for an IFR flight like that you will have 2 flight...

You can expect around 6K€ T0 7K€.

You are not currently required to hold a valid class rating I the UK/Ireland, some member states require it but not all. This may however come into force in the future.

The retraining requirements will depend on your ability and how rusty you are, any ATO that tells you that you must redo the training programme is trying to rob you. There should be an assessment of your history and recent experience, an individual training programme designed and if you are ready for prof check before that then you should be recommended.

Twin time is very expensive now, best get some FSTD time in!

An Instrument Rating is valid for 12 Months and will be revalidated by Proficiency Check. A Multi-Engine Instrument Rating will normally be be revalidated by proficiency check at the same time as revalidation of the aeroplane rating, but may be renewed separately.
If your MEP class rating is valid, you can renew your IR in simulator (indeed it's cheaper)
If you don't have anything valid (class/type rating), for reducing cost it will be better to renew both in one flight (IR-ME/MEP).
In EASA land, you cannot have an stand-alone IR(A) without a class/type rating valid. Before it was possible in JAA land.
EASA instrument rating - IR(A) revalidation | Flight examiner ? re-validation, flight school, flight traiing
EASA instrument rating renewal IR(A) | Flight examiner ? re-validation, flight school, flight traiing

I haven't flown in a few years so instrument and MEP class ratings have expired. MEP has expired by nearly 4 years and IR by nearly 3 years.

Is it not a case now that I cannot just renew my IR without a MEP class rating? I have no intention of using the privileges of a MEP rating. I just wish to renew my IR to start a type rating.

Cheers

Email your relevant licencing authority and ask them for written clarification, if you have a job lined up then do not make any mistakes.

Show me the current regulation in EASA that requires you to hold a current class rating????

You can renew your ME/IR without the class rating if needs be. It's not much extra to do the class so it might be worth it.

You can also revalidate your ME/IR in the sim if your ME/IR is valid, again nothing to do with the class rating.

The French may require you to hold a valid class (French licence) but many others don't.

Cheers Nick, hopefully this is the case as I don't fancy forking out for an MEP class rating again

Hey Guys,
I have a similar question too.My MEP rating expired 1 1/2 years ago and my IR expired 4 months ago.Do I need to renew the MEP prior to the IR renewal? My license is fom the UK but I have noticed different countries have different rules.Could you please share any info as to what the procedure is?Suppose if I do it in malta or hungary or greece will the CAA accept that?
Thanks.

Nope, no need for a current class rating, just get some refresher training and do the ME/IR prof check renewal, it's a little cheaper and shorter.

As for the place the check takes place I am unsure but as long as the examiner is briefed and operated to the examiner differences document they should accept the paperwork.

Bear in mind though some EASA states may want you to have a current class rating however you can renew both at the same time.
