FTE assessment
Hey guys,
I'm thinking of taking the assessment day for this flight school, and was wondering if any of you have done it before, and what advice you could give to me that would help me pass! I have an A in GCSE maths and physics, and an A level in maths too. What is the best way to prepare for this test! Any advice is appreciated.

Hello Jaimie,
Im also in the same boat as you and currently searching through old FTE assessment threads. Could anyone whose taken the assessment recently shed some light on the tests themselves? I have the pre-test guidance material so know what to expect in regards to content. However, how is the test conducted? Is it like CTC's 15 questions in 15 minutes? Is it a calculator or non calculator test? etc.

Get your mental arithmetic up to speed. Put the calculator in the bin.
The Scottish SQA school exams at national 5 level have a separate exam paper. Go to their website and enjoy.....you need to enjoy numbers to choose this as a career path.
Your Maths & physics will put you in sound position.
So long as you are not assessed as a "training risk" go for it.
As for the flying, hand to eye coordination is critical. Golfers with a handicap of ten or less will do well. Success at balls games is a valid indicator. Team player really important.
You peak at age 19. Post 30 ~ you will need to work harder to succeed.
Get an initial class one medical issued soonest.

I know someone who has done it recently.
He said he could use a calculator - bit of a give away as there is trig in the guidance material and you can't really do cos53 for example without a calculator.
I went to the Pilot Careers Event and spoke to the head of training at FTE. He said the assessment is multiple choice for maths and physics and is done on paper. then there is vr and nr on a computer. the 2d and 3d hand eye coordination tests.

I did it last month. It's a brilliant event, I'd recommend it to anyone who's considering going.
In regard to testing (which you may use a calculator for that they will provide), you have:
verbal reasoning: (I'd get some practice in, this is tricky, pass mark is about 65% but they will not refuse to offer you a place on the basis of scoring below this mark)
numerical reasoning: (read the question thoroughly, but overall not too bad) for example: A pilot has 36 gallons of fuel and during the flight he notices a leak. The aircraft is leaking at 6 gallons an hour. The aircraft burns 4 litres an hour in fuel. The aircraft is going 200 knots and the destination is 400nm away. Will he make it?
maths + physics test: not too bad, all the stuff in the pre test material they send you.
numeracy: fairly easy, nothing too challenging! (IMHO)
Basically, read the test guidance material thoroughly, you'll do fine.
PILAPT: go on latest pilot jobs, have a look at the practice packs for assessments. They're really useful, just make sure you practice with a joystick.
Interview: Really good, they just want to get to know you and make sure you're keen, passionate, aware of the road ahead.
As parkfell said, get your class 1 medical, you don't want to go all the way and find out there's something holding you back,
I had a brilliant time at my event and loved the place and was pleased to be offered a spot there.

Interesting, thanks.
I haven't done it, a friend has. I asked him as I am going to be doing an assessment soon. They don't have anything about wavelengths on the info pack. Just most of the forces & motion gcse topic, small amount of the electricity, energy and SLG topics. Nothing on waves.

Hmm, curious.
I can promise you, it was there!
Out of the 14 people that were on my day, only 1 failed. So as long as you prepare well, you go in with your eyes open, do your research, you'll be fine!
It's really informal too, you meet all the other cadets in the bar, absolutely great event.

Ah well. There's a bit about light just saying how fast it is in a vacuum. Wavelengths isn't so bad. I still remember it (just about) from my school days.

Thanks for all the replies guys, do you have any websites or recommendations where to practice the maths/physics questions? shall I use my old GCSE textbooks, or my A level textbooks? thanks

SunsetSheepLandings, don't loose too much sleep over it. As long as you have a good understanding of GCSE maths/physics, you'll be fine. Not started yet, starting with CTC Wings (turned down FTE in the end) in February.
Doing lots of pre-course reading though, air law/meteorology/the aeroplane technical, because frankly I've got some time to kill. Anything I learn now is something that won't need to be learned later. Can't wait though. Just battling through the BBVA/Insurance paperwork atm, believe me, it can be a pain!

Brilliant question! This was a hot topic during my assessment day.
The official 'brief' is that you only need to wear a suit during your interview and your debrief (where they break the good/bad news). The first day is travelling, checking in, having a quick brief, having dinner then having a few beers/whatever your poison is and catching up with the other cadets. Don't bother wearing a suit when you're travelling (unless you don't fancy carrying it-whatever works).
The next morning is a tour/presentation from the head of flight school. My group quickly decided that we were going to be suited and booted for this part (even though it wasn't 'required'). I'd recommend you do the same. Better overdressed than under, plus it saves you getting changed before your interview. In my debrief (which by chance was with the head of flight school) he said: You were dressed smartly, you've shaved, you can tell you're not here to mess about (He didn't do my interview, he only saw me during his presentation).
Once your interview/debrief is over, we all changed into our casuals, had a few beers and celebrated.
A long answer to a quick question, but take from it what you want

FTE assessment
Don't worry
I have passed the computer based maths, orientation, colour matching etc etc...
It was easy cake walk if you have prepared courses from any commercial websites.
But I could not clear interview and Group assessment.
I am still confused and could not understand were i went wrong.
So, my thoughts for you is concentrate equally on both PILAPT and interactive skills
Kindly let me know if you have any groups to practise
I live in Bournemouth, i can join you for preparing

Thank you very much SH, all the info you've given me has helped alot. I also found the revision pack very useful to begin to prepare for the assessment days.
