Professional Pilot Training (includes ground studies)A forum for those on the steep path to that coveted professional licence. Whether studying for the written exams, training for the flight tests or building experience here's where you can hang out.
From my perspective this thread has made very interesting reading. I'm a wanabee and now after graduating from uni, and getting my PPL i am in a position where i can start hour building /atpl theoretical exams. I thought long and hard about which is the best route for me, and after a lot of research I decided modular was best. I work part time and have structured it so I only work a couple of evenings a week plus weekends so will be able to devote a relatively large amount of time per week to hour building/ studying. Whilst the huge financial investment required is frightening, I have seen too many of my friends that have graduated go into jobs that they dont want, and I'm determined not to do that-even if it means being in the red for a long time! Not yet decided where to do my flight training after hour building/ exams so any advice/comments would be appreciated.
I was a wannabee..... Got my PPL in europe, came to the US and studied.
I still remember flying in the UK - scraping ice off the planes in the morning. But the best thing - I was excited. I loved it. Couldn't beat the feeling.
Then work got harder - CPL and all that... Money got tight, and I got married (still with her, still love her), so long story short, left the biz....
8 years later, same wifey!! And she tells me to get back into aviation. We plough our savings into an FBO. Awesome - like they say, can't beat the smell of burning JET-A in the morning. Made lots of contacts, got lots of job offers. But Mrs. Bxkflier says I have to be home not out having fun (cos it's a glamorous life a pilot huh?).
I thought my life was complete, and happy. THen I saw the Oxford chappies - god, you trainees are getting younger (or is it me getting older ), and the Lufthansa Bods. And I saw that sparkle in their eyes, the love.
That's why anybody who can eke a living out as a pilot has my respect, admiration, heck, and love.
I would gladly give everything I own and posess (even Mrs. Bxkflier) just to get that sparkle back in my eyes, but the world taint's everything.
Good luck to all you wannabees. If you believe in yourself, you can do it. And there will be those of us (myself included), who are just a tad jealous, but who respect you.
To be honest, I wouldnt be suprised if there were more wannabees compared to pilots here because as a wannabee myself I can say that this forum is an outstanding source of information. In this industry the best advice you can get is from people who have been there, done that not flying schools who cant see your face, just your pockets. I come on this forum everynight and scour the wannabee forum looking for information that can make the somewhat blurry vision ahead slightly clearer and it helps.
I'm new to PPRuNe, just wondering if anyone knows if there are any fixed wing sponsorships available in the uk apart from grants offered by GAPAN and the royal aero society. I'm keen to stay away from loans/bonds etc.. ???
I am a Wannabe right now. But I will soon be getting my PPL. Apart from my flying schools, coach and my "n" number of practice hours, Internet and websites like this have helped with lot of information.
Taking online tests boosted my confidence and would also like to recommend a book at Private Pilots Secrets.
I was just amused at the information that they are giving out for free in these sites that we don't get even in our flying schools. I am thinking of creating a blog and give out all the flying lessons for fellow men like me. Who aspire to be pilots shortly. So those who are wannabes don't give up your dreams there are tons of resources on the website just go thro them and be a pilot in no time.
If you get a first officer pilot job with an airline, will you have to move near that airlines hub airport? eg I live in Milton Keynes, so if I manage 2 get a pilot job will I have to move to places like luton, london, crawley, manchester? etc.....
just to ask you i want to start training next year and i am looking for a school with good reputation here in orange county california do you or anyboby can recomend me one ?
hi wobble2plank
i want to start helicopter training next year here in orange county california have heard that there are more jobs available for hel pilots tha fixed wing do you think that is accurate ? now since you are already a helicopter pilot could you tell me about your experience ? do companies require a lot of hours just like the airlines or in pilot laguage what do you think it would be a right approach for person who just starts in this business .
I've been lucky. Went in at the bottom and came out at the top. I am unable to do fly anymore but I am now back in at the bottom end where I can give something back to a career that gave so much to me. If there was a piece of advice I'd give it would be that there is nothing like this career and it's worth working towards, but never give up and good luck will find you. Remember you MAKE good luck as it rarely comes for free. One more thing; Try to get into the business to finance your flying. There are flying schools, training providers,GA outfits, cargo, airlines. Try to earn your money in the business. That helps!!!!

I just found out that theres an exhibition in one of the Heathrow, London hotels held by Flyer Professional flight training for anyone interested in a flying career. I hear most of the major flight training establishments based in the UK will have reps there. Hopefully they will have something for me!!
The exhibition was held on Saturday 3rd Nov at the Renaissance Hotel, Heathrow but I understand they will be putting details of the various seminars on the Flyer website within the next few days. I think they hold one every 6 months but definately worth going to.

I am originally from India. Presently settled in USA as an engineer. I just finished my PPL and going forward to get my Commericial License. At the same time I want to prepare for the DGCA exams conducted in India. Can anyone know, what kind of prep book/CD/Audio books is recommeded to use. I barely have any information and even google isn't giving me satisfactory search result. Any pointers on how to prepare for DGCA exams would help me a lot.
After asking around in my circle, I came to know that books on GRound school for Pilots and some Keith Williams Q bank would help. But when I googled that, I didnt get ANY satisfactory information. I am totally confused and also the DGCA website is not at all user friendly, to understand what are the requirements for a foreign pilot to get a Pilot license in India. But for me at first I would like to concentrate on preparing for DGCA exams. Any help in this regard is highly appreciated.
