How much harder is the IR than the IMC?

I've recently completed my IMC rating and passed the flight test with no problems. I'd love to do the IR one day (I have no intention of going commercial) but as well as the cost of the course I'm slightly put off by the seemingly higher failure rate for the IR test than of the other various flight tests that one takes.

How much harder is the IR than the IMC? How pedantic are the examiners?...I don't like the sound of the Instrument Rating failure thread...all that nonsense about not shutting doors properly and constantly looking at watches.
