Theory finished at home while working full time?

Hi just interested in getting some thoughts on this.
So i'm working full time to save for my CPL but i was wondering, in the meantime, can I finish off all the theory ie. up to ATPL, at home?
Anyone done this? How would I go about it - is it simply buy the text books and then sit the exam at CASA once you think you're ready?
I've passed my BAK and have my GFPT, but I did that years ago at a flying school.
Cheers,
Joel.
