experimentals hourbuilding

For the issue of a CPL licence one needs 200 hrs flown in Aeroplanes.
I know that a Microlight is not regarded as an Aeroplane, but what about Experimentals? Can hours flown in Experimentals be counted towards the 200hrs requirement?

I called the CAA about this but they didn't really know. They told me that the flight school would need to judge my logbook to see whether I met the requirements, which I find very strange because flightschools follow the rules of the CAA and not the other way around....
