North Coates airfield

Does anyone operate out of North Coates? I wish to visit there soon, but having Google Earthed for the runways I can't see any defined grass strip as published in Pooleys. Is the concrete not available?

The ncflyingclub.flyer.co.uk website doesn't seem to work.

as far as i know, the hard runway has been,( or is being,) removed. unfortunately google isnt always up to date. my airfield is 5 yrs out of date!

The grass runway 05/23 is parallel to on the north side of the old dug up R/W. Spurn Point / Head more or less points at the airfield

I wonder how deep they dug.
A friend of mine told me North Coates was his first posting in the RAF. They went to re-open it as a Bloodhound missile base in the late '50s I believe; the 'chiefy' in charge found a Robin type hangar had a large padlock on it; on cutting it off and opening the doors, they found the hangar crammed full of Beaufighter spares. Now this was embarassing to the chiefy 'cos they weren't on his inventory and he would have to account for them, so he ordered the airmen to dig a hole in the airfield and bury them! As far as I know they're still there.

Doesn't depict the Bloodhound launch pads east of the housing estate; have they been dug up?

If you go on the 23-24th Aug, make sure you go visually as there is a GPS jamming trial.

Great airfield, have a look round the hanger :) and only £3 landing fee (for microlights, not sure about GA)

North Coates has a resident manufacturer of quality (and that's an understatement) jams and chutneys. Alison always has a wee stall at the flyins. They also have superb local sausage baps. Well worth a visit.

I went to North Coates last summer. There was no one there, literally. Nice location though.

The airfield is run voluntarily, best days to go are weekends and on Wednesdays depending on the weather. During the summer there is always evening flying.
Nice stuff in the hangar. Miles Gemini, Chrysler Super Ace, Spitfire Mk 26, SE5a replica, old Slinsgby T21 motorised glider plua about 15 other various types

chevvron 31st Dec 2012 12:53

Would that be anything like a Chrislea Super Ace?

If you need a hard runway especially at this time of year Strubby (OLD HELIPORT)
has 700 m of tarmac. About 5 miles from Mablethorpe other than that its Humberside.
