I suspect that $30,000 US will be the absolute minimum. Do they know which hospital he is in?

Thank you for posting that. He was stupendously helpful to me a few years back with an aircraft I was on the verge of scrapping. Very upset to hear about his accident.

Hi All,

I've been in contact with Zanna and she has asked me to explain and hopefully put your minds at rest.

Zanna is Colins Ex-girlfriend and his UK Support. She has access to has facebook page and is currently working with Colins parents and the Japanese to Colin into surgery.

I wish my ex-girlfriends looked upon me with such compassion, I don;t even get Christmas cards.

On a seperate note thanks for all the donations to date £3500 in 6 hours in some going.

Zanna is well known to us at Shenington Gliding Club. She is close friends with Colin, and is trustworthy.

Some wonderful response to Colin's plight. The fund is at £4600 already.

Apart from Colin's medical expenses there is the problem of how to bring him home with the aircraft.

Or is he going to be stubborn in Japan and rebuild it?

please don't jump to conclusions and take your anti-Colin agenda somewhere else... who said he didn't have an insurance? Have you ever made a medical insurance claim? In some cases it can be pretty involving especially if the medical facility is in one country, but the insurer is in another. In most cases you will end up paying with your own cash for the service and then, when you have the receipts and everything sorted, you can go to your insurer and hope that they will pay at least some of it back.

Hospitals might refuse some parts of treatment if they don't see cash coming in for the services, I have no trouble believing that he needs money now..

Can I suggest that creating a Crowdfunding page for an expense that will be covered by an insurance policy is not exactly 'kosher'.

My understanding, and that of many others, is that he's asking the money because he doesn't have any insurance. Perhaps this can be clarified?

so far no word whether he did or did not have an insurance, or if he did - will it cover everything completely or not. Like I tried to explain in my post above, it's not that straight forward even if you are insured, it's a very messy and bureaucratic process and you might not see the money for months even if you are insured..

what we do know, from the official fundraising page is this:

He faces a very large medical bill, and at first was refusing treatment as he doesn't have the money. His friends and family have made sure surgery will go ahead in Japan. There is no price for a life.
The bill will likely be around $30,000, so I am hoping that between us we can raise a little something to help his family with this expense.


This type of stuff is common outside EU - if the hospital doesn't see the money upfront, they will do the bare minimum to keep you alive, but you can pretty much be discharged on the spot if you cant pay for your surgery ..

I'm seen this sort of thing second hand in Switzerland in ski accidents
You provide either your insurance medical card or start paying by credit card on admission
Otherwise it is as per @Martin 123 says

oh sure, I agree, and I think it probably will be clarified at some point sooner or later, I think the problem here for now is that Colin is not doing this or speaking for himself - it's his friend million miles away who's organizing this and she probably might not have all the facts yet either.

She did say that any leftover cash will go right to charity and that's good enough for me.

Personally, I helped out with what I could, no stroking of the grey beard or tuting at the irresponsibilty of going without insurance. Some of the more senior members of the forum have voched for the organiser and thats enough for me.

Tragic news! After so much determination and effort.

I'm convinced that Colin will give it another shot once he has fully recovered

Zanna is an absolute inspiration and a breath of fresh air as an ex.
My ex went running off with the money as I laid in a coma

it's one thing when you're arguing Colins lack of preparedness back in the topic where he was stuck.. a completely different thing when you come along after the crash and when a man is in hospital with pretty bad traumas with your "I'm not surprised - I told you so" attitude.. your unethical behavior truly disgusts me
