Terry just to clear up a few points that are evident since this saga came to light.

1. There is plenty of "new" information out there, it just needs to be cross-checked before it is published. I also think there will be plenty more to uncover as we dig deeper - just as the Herne Bay video surfaced long after the controversy started and after the LAA had their AGM.

2. I don't see Boeing as the villain in this but they are to a large extent complicit, as are Artemis; they could have done a lot more to frap down the loose cannon. One could surmise that it suited them not to do this because of the publicity that a solo venture attracted where a dual jolly would not. Boeing press releases say it was a solo flight.

3. The media was very well handled. They were fed the yarns and ran with it. It can be shown as FACT that she used the solo aspect in interviews, press stories and general presentations she gave (Alone in an open cockpit presentation, "on my own" statement to the Telegraph, Women's Institute guest-night, Herne Bay video...shall I go on?) . I have watched far too many of her videos and there are numerous occasions where the interviewer asks about solo and TCT answers without correcting the error (Kate Tojero interview springs to mind but there are others). The media was used to the benefit of TCT, the sponsors and Bird in a Biplane Ltd.

4. The statements on the BiaB website are the biggest pieces of misdirection in this mess. They don't answer the questions at all, they don't address the issues, and they certainly insult the intelligence of some very knowledgeable people. Typically they attempt to shift the blame onto others. Have a read of them again and show us where it clears the air, bearing in mind that some of the "answers" provided have been subsequently shot down in flames. Example: From the 24 Oct statement -

I have stated publicly previously (11 June 2016) that I am deeply disappointed at the comments coming from a particular source making false assertions that my flight expeditions should have been executed as solo flights – and that I have claimed them as such.

No one has said the flight should have been solo, unless of course that was the whole reason for Boeing and Artemis coughing up the cash. What most on here are saying is that she should never have claimed as such long after they were not. Certainly no award should have been accepted for something that turns out to be a fairly common aviation feat. As for the last sentence there, all I will say is ...Herne Bay.

..and yes, this is all mired in controversy.

I for one am glad that you came back to this thread. Your input and take on this is most welcome as would TCT's.

Could the requirement for another pilot to be with her have been some kind of insurance requirement? A "safety pilot", particularly after taxiing into the Robinson? It doesn't make any of it "right" but it could explain a few things. Sorry, not familiar where the Robbo accident fits into the timeline of the deception.

Yet. But it surely will in time.
Not a snowballs chance in hell. The whole Bird in a Biplane thing is over. It takes a ton of money to mount this sort of stunt and companies don't front up with their cash without a whole lot of due diligence. Ten minutes of due diligence on the internet, tells a commercial operation everything it needs to know which would immediately evoke a boardroom response of...

"are you ****ing kidding me!"

Personally, I suspect it was over well before any of this kicked off on pprune.

People are not dumb (Facebook trolls excepted, of course).

What lies Terry?

Point these lies out to us please or are you refering to TCT's whoppers. If the latter then I agree with you.

Doubtful Clareprop. She did 10% of her solo flights actually solo. If it was a requirement then it would have been for all legs.

The story about wanting to share the experience with others is utter rubbish. She either wanted someone with her for all barring the simplest of legs or someone with a vested interest in the aircraft didn't feel comfortable with her on her own.

I think that there is a lot in that SATCO. Still wonder why he didn't take over with the EFATO and subsequent prang.

This lady has taken a lot of flak here, and probably rightly so, but she has done something that I would love to have done, fly an antique to Australia, solo or dual!

Why is anyone still on about this woman flying an antique to Australia? I did in 1993 without fan fare

If you want to see a modern day hero who DID do it SOLO look up Flt Lt David Cyster in a DH 82a

Many thanks for highlighting that DHP.

Very enjoyable reading over a beer here in the tropics. By coincidence Barry Tempest, who is mentioned in the TCT statement on her website, once owned a share in the Tiger. https://publicapps.caa.co.uk/docs/Hi...l/G-ANRF-2.pdf

(This article was published in the Flight International magazine, 30 May 1978 )
On February 7 David Cyster took off from Dunsfold, Surrey, in his Tiger Moth on a 10,000 n.m. flight to Sydney, 50 years to the day after Bert Hinkler's departure on the first solo flight to Australia. The story of how Flt Lt Cyster relived this pioneering flight in an old open* cockpit biplane is told by IVAN RENDALL, who looked after the many arrangements needed.

DAVID CYSTER set out to operate as far as possible under the same conditions as Hinkler - a brave exercise, inviting inevitable and critical comparisons between today's pilots and the pioneers of the 1920s. It may seem significant, therefore, that he suffered from the same three main problems that plagued Hinkler: unpredictable weather (despite modern forecasting methods), fatigue and fuel leaks. But there was an obstacle in 1978 which Hinkler was blessedly spared: the bureaucracy which surrounds international flying, especially in light aircraft.

Planning, both in the 12 months prior to take-off, and careful flight-planning during the 32 days en route to Darwin, was the foundation of his successfully completed flight.
It was not a record-breaking attempt. The days when Tigers would suffer "throttle bending" through the tropics are over. Many asked why the flight to Darwin took twice as long as Hinkler's record 16 days. Though Cyster modestly attributes this to the pioneer's skill, it has to be noted that in 1928 planning was very much the pilot's prerogative, and he was assured of a warm welcome wherever his atlas was painted red.
Cyster's route was longer, to avoid touchy political areas, especially in the Middle East. It was planned in legs of as near 700 n.m. as possible, and the longest and coldest turned out to be the 620 n.m. to Marseilles. Before February 7, Cyster's longest flight in a Tiger Moth was a 2.5 hour leg to Dunsfold from his base at RAF Valley the previous day.

And a later Tiger flight. May I say perhaps a little more worthy of recognition, Brian not being a professional as was David.

Brian Edwards | Edwards Wines

On March 2nd, 1990 after some fifteen years of planning, Brian Edwards, Edwards Winery founder and amateur pilot, left Binbrook Airfield in England bound for Australia. Flying solo in his 1943 Tiger Moth “Matilda”, he set off to achieve his goal to fly the route of the great Australian aviation pioneers, Bert Hinkler and Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. His trip also set out to honour the memory of his late father Clifford, who went missing in action in World War II, and to raise money for Legacy who had cared for him and his mother for twenty years.

It was an epic journey to say the least, from the first disastrous day of the journey where he had to make a forced landing due to a snapped crankshaft all the way to his successful completion of the journey and arrival at Langley Park in Perth on May 13th, 1990.

Professional or otherwise both deserve the accolades that TCT has received. But I suspect neither gentleman are self serving egotists who crave publicity.

At least the above demonstrates that a DeHaviland could still do the trip today.
A friend of mine is not complimentary on the Tiger.

He wrote this over a decade ago.

The Gipsy Moth flown by Chichester was a well designed light aeroplane.
The Tiger Moth was cobbled together from a Moth Major, shoving the top wing forward, hacking away at the interplane struts, sawing bits off the rear spars... A fine aeroplane was turned into an awful contraption.

A good point. Actually all the fuss, and definitely the awards, are highly insulting to women! Any half-decent female pilot would have refused them.

Seriously? 178 pages of whining and bitching from a bunch of blokes about a woman doing something impressive? Haven't you lot got something better to do? Like, plan your own flight around the world?

Jeez. Pathetic.

For those fed up with the perceived persecution, this thread, in a small way is a reflection of the crazy world we live in now. If you make a statement enough times and it goes unchallenged, it becomes 'fact'. There are more examples of this currently in politics on both sides of the pond than its worth going into.

Why should someone receive accolades and be allowed to make money on the back of lies?

Just to remind you RCSA she did nothing impressive.

A virtually brand new aircraft with a very experienced engineer and commercial pilot flying dual. Add to that a multi million pound budget and support team plus expensive PR companies. They dawdled along for three months while staying in high end hotels. I think I could have easily done it in a microlight in that time frame.

Any newly fledged PPL could have done it.

No evidence of the big outreach project yet.

The examples above are people who did the trip alone in a Tiger Moth which is similar to Amy Johnsons aircraft. They received no awards but did the trip for self satisfaction.

Haven't you lot got something better to do? Like, plan your own flight around the world?
Some of us have done very long flights without bragging. I have certainly done a lot of flying in interesting places around the world. I have paid all my expenses and never sought any sort of publicity.
