Min requirement for IR(I)
Hi
Could somebody tell me or point me in the right direction for the min aircraft requirement in order to do an IMC/IR(R) in my own aircraft? Can I do it if the engine is 'on condition'?
Regards

Hi Felix.
Theoretically, you could do an IR(R)/IMC in an aircraft with a limited panel, and just one navaid, such as VOR, or ADF.
Personally I wouldn't teach IR(R)/IMC with anything less than a full six instrument panel with redundant systems, VOR/ILS, ADF, DME, and XPDR. with at least modes A+C.
If you want an IR(R)/IMC that you can use in any practical sense, you need all those.
Yes.

MJ, out of interest would you fly yourself ( not teach) IFR with a full six pack, 1 top notch vor/ils/gs, 1 **** hot Vfr GPS, and a back up AI, 2 com radios , and a mode s txp

For the IR(R) test, the requirements are in Standards Document 25(A) para 2.2.

But without DME and ADF I would be very restricted in the types of IFR approach I could accept, and that would bear heavily on my decision to go, or not.
For instance, few ILS systems now have markers, and rely on DME to crosscheck the G/S. Also, most ILS systems have an NDB as the IAF and as part of the missed approach procedure.
This would leave me depending on radar vectors to the localiser, the controller calling out the ranges for me to check the glideslope, and non standard, radar guided, missed approach. I would also be relying on an SRA as my backup approach.
All it would take is a radar failure, to leave me without a usable approach aid.
