Adding an SSEA rating to PPL Group (A)

My old style PPL(A) 1981 needs revalidating after a few good years'ssss

Having recently obtained good advice from a well known source am thinking of adding an SSEA rating to my licence (plus LAPL medical, available from your GP, if he/she is willing).... so much confusion abounds in the madness of the EU/EASA etc but am sure a minefield has been cleared by getting this rare and excellent info.... at a time onre can't see the wood for trees

Has anyone been down this road very recently ???..... how to go about getting the ssea etc, i.e. what's involved cost wise and any training.......great to get some hard facts. At least it will mean can get some flying in for a few years without lashing out hundreds of ££££

Adding an SSEA Class rating to an old CAA PPL, or converting it to an NPPL, are just paperwork exercises, unless the Group A/SEP Class rating has expired.

If the Group A/SEP Class rating has expired, and yoiu cannot meet the requirements for a Class 2 Medical, The process for either of the above is the same, ie. Issue of a Medical Declaration/LAPL Medical, training as required by an FI, an NPPL GST, and issue of NPPL or PPL SSEA.

Both of these will give you NPPL privileges on all aircraft until April 2018, when the privileges will be restricted to Annex 2 aircraft only.

At any time diring this period, you can convert your NPPL/PPL(SSEA) to a LAPL, again with just a LAPL Medical, and a paperwork exercise.

If you think you will want to fly EASA aircraft beyond April 2018, or you want to fly outside the UK, the best, and cheapest way to proceed is to complete the requirements for the issue of an NPPL/SSEA, as above, with a LAPL Medical, and then, without the need to have the NPPL/SSEA issued, apply directly to the CAA for the issue of a LAPL.

Be aware of the very different revalidation requirements of a LAPL.

MJ, you were spot on with this:

The application form is here:

However the following is incorrect:

..and then, without the need to have the NPPL/SSEA issued, apply directly to the CAA for the issue of a LAPL.
The agreement is for conversion of an existing NPPL SSEA to LAPL. Clearly they must hold the valid licence/class rating in order to apply for conversion to a LAPL under this agreement. CAP 804, Section 4, Part P, page 11.

The only exception to this is that we obtained an agreement to not have to go through obtaining a LAPL when going NPPL > LAPL > PPL, where the applicant who holds a NPPL SSEA can just complete the upgrade requirements as per FCL.210.A and FCL.235, then apply for a EASA PPL without first obtaining a LAPL. CAP 804, Section 4, Part P, page 12.

I'll PM you with the email I have from the CAA agreeing that this is possible.

Thanks for your thoughts and information Mach Jump and ifitaintboeing, but guys it's TMI as am trying like many others to block out and escape the bureaucratic idiocy of the EASA......and it's utter confusion......been there and done it. Like this definition of bureaucracy from Merriam Webster, it certainly brought a smile and really says it all

" a system of government or business that has many complicated rules and ways of doing things"

Anyhow I digress

I should mention that my SEP expired around 8 years ago, and in my case, in my sixth decade plus , am attempting to avoid confusion and simplify the situation somewhat to at least get back into the loop once more
(whatever happened along the way, to 1980 flying at £40 per hour and quiet skies

I will actually be going for the NPPL self certification method (hopefully my GP will be nice and sign me off) so I can started on the SSEA rating to my hard earned 1981 PPL

A very respected and reliable source, kindly took his valuable time and explained "very simply and in plain english "me that this is the best way of rebooting your flying and should be good until late 2017 or 2018 touch wood, not definite obviously with the EASA changing the rules as they go along
Anyhow, bottom line, convert your SEP to an SSEA, do some refresher training and and get pass from the examiner.......you are good to go to fly your usual 152 or 140

So all is not lost............still have the passion and feel confident if slightly apprehensive. Best to do it however rather than having to retrace the steps back to the early days. Anyhow just could not afford it these days
