Church Fenton (Leeds East) now open unlicensed on the Weekends

A friend of mine has managed to get in touch with Mark Terry, one of the airfield managers at Church Fenton (Leeds East).

Mark has now confirmed that Church Fenton (Leeds East) is now open on a PPR unlicensed Weekend basis, starting from this Weekend. They have plans to be licensed, open 7 Days a Week by the 1st of April.

In the E-Mail, he lists 2 mandatory PPR numbers:
0113286 2631 or 07450 461045

Great news.
Bring it on.
I thought a certain aerobatic pilot was going to be the airfield manager?

I heard he was going to be involved in another capacity. Just rumours at the moment though.

Not sure the CAA Aerodrome Licensing Dept work that fast...... Most ex-Mil airfields require quite a bit of work to bring them up to a compliant ICAO or CAA civilian standard. Lee on Solent has taken over 2 years so far but nearly there That said, the team at CF are top notch and in conjunction with the CAA, will get it done as soon as practically possible

I think you are probably right, Chuffer. No reason they can't open unlicenced in the meantime though.

There's very little point in being a licensed aerodrome unless you plan to host commercial traffic. Most of us will be very happy to visit without it being licensed

But I think the intention is that there will be CAT.

I've seen some pretty basic airfields which are licenced let alone the rather upmarket facilities available at CF. What exactly would cause any delay in licensing somewhere like this?

If CAT or biz jet traffic is expected then they'll want ATC instrument approaches and a licence. Delays will be entirely due to the tedious bureaucracy at the CAA, which is getting better under new management, but there are still a lot of dinosaurs on the payroll.

I think you'll find Regulatasaurus is a dying breed at the CAA.

One did. There's been a partially successful attempt to remove them from the other. There was one aircraft yesterday parked on that huge Apron.

Beer down nose.

Seriously though, I suppose folk will want to logbook it the once but if there's an airfield literally two minutes away with steak pie, veg and chips for a fiver or so who's going to go to Fenton regularly?

I had a backseat reserved for the fly-in but had to regrettably drop-out due to other commitments. Hopefully will get a chance shortly to fly over from EGNM.
