Cessna 175

Hi,

I am about to start flying a Cessna 175 with a GO-300 geared engine. How differently does it handle to a 172? It's the first aircraft i have flown with a geared engine. Does anyone have any advice on managing it? I have heard that they can be quite tricky?

Thanks
C

You did not mention which year your 175 was. Later ones had cowl flaps to help keep CHT's down on on long climbs. The earlier ones did not so low speed prolonged climbs should be avoided.

The RPM gauge reads engine RPM not prop speed so you will see higher then normal readings. Set the POH RPM as a "normal" RPM like you are use to seeing (eg 2300) will be too low.

The throttle should never be reduced to idle in flight, except for in the flare, as the negative thrust is hard on the reduction gearing. Always do power on descents.

Other then that it flies like every other light Cessna

Having flown both my observations are:

1. The 175 climbs out like the proverbial homesick angel compared to the 172. I believe it has a different wing section.
2. It also has great short field landing characteristics which I think are a little better than the 172
3. In terms of the wobbly prop, gearing etc, I'd suggest you talk to you instructor about the various settings. I didn't think the skylark was much different to a 182 for engine management. If you have a jpi EDM 700 or 830 device installed, then will allow you to really get the best out of the engine.
4. As BPW says other characteristics are v similar, though I think the 175 goes a little bit faster at 130mph cruise for about 34 lph as I recall.

Lovely aircraft.

Hey,

It's a 1961 Cessna 175B.

Thanks for the advice. I plan on Flying to spain in the Spring. I flew down there in August in a slingsby but 2 up we where limited with Range and payload. Plus it was very cramped!
