fish Shining Tor- Cheshire, Uk

Peak Soaring Association (PSA) Shining Tor Site Appeal

PSA have been informed that the owner of Shining Tor in Cheshire will retire this year and sell the site.

He has been a staunch supporter of Hang Gliding and Paragliding for nearly thirty years so his decision to leave seriously threatens the future of flying on this superb and popular westerly site.

PSA has started a determined effort to secure the future of this site and has made, and will continue to make, approaches to secure flying rights before any such sale.

However, we now know that the site will be sold by auction on 1st July 2004. The whole farm will be split into lots with Shining Tor being one full and complete land component of 114 acres. The size of this site alone may place the sale price beyond £100K, a cost higher than any other previous site purchase. With this likely scenario in mind PSA needs your help urgently and immediately to build up funds for all eventualities.

Shining Tor is the most prominent site in the area, many will have flown it and many will have learnt to fly there. If someone else buys it, that may be the end of any flying there.

What you can do.

There are many ways to give financial support, straight forward donations, fund raising purchases, selling/buying raffle tickets and speaking to anyone (Employers, Companies) who might help with financial support. Please become involved now.

Please respond as soon as possible

If you need any further information please contact us.

Good luck with your appeal

Looks like aviation in the north west is being squezzed from all directions.

Just a thought have you tried the Sports Council? If you can convince them I believe 50% grants are a possibillity

Or what about the Heritage Lottery Fund. Tell them you are Lesbian Asylum Seeking Dancers on Air. Sure to get half a mill!

Echoing Sir George, is nothing fun-aviation-related in the North West going to survive? Shining Tor is a moorland ridge in the Cheshire Peak, very beutiful but with absolutely no potential for 'development'. I'd have thought if anything would survive in the grassiest roots of aviation in our area, hill sites like this would.

What next????

Thankyou all for the show of support.

As regards Lottery funding etc. Yes we have already pursued this and they should double anything we can raise.

The biggest problem is that the local rumour mill is saying that a VERY wealthy local landowner wants the land for raising Grouse.

This particular landowner's ranger has already tried to stop us landing in front of the Cat n Fiddle Pub (first port of call if you lose that first thermal half way up!!), wouldn't mind so much except that he doesn't even own that bit of land anyway.

Well, tomorrow is the big day of the auction.

To anyone out there who has contributed to the fighting fund, I thank you for your support.

My personal fear is that we do not have the funds to match the opposition bids. This could be a very black day for free flyers in the NW of England.

Er....Ms P, they aren't going to knock it down. It's a hill.

Good luck to the gliding people in keeping the aviation stuff going.

Well we didn't raise enough to buy it.

Lord Derby has it now, we were able to push him up to nearly £60,000 but then our funds ran dry.

His estate will be using it for raising (and shooting) Grouse.

The PSA is currently in negotiations with the new owner re flying rights. It does not look good but we live in hope.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed to the fighting fund.

Great news for the free flyers of the NW of England. Lord Derby has negotiated with the PSA an agreement to allow hang-gliding and paragliding to continue on Shining Tor.

Terrible news for the free flyers of the NW of England. Lord Derby has now demanded £5,000,000 of 3rd party liability insurance!! Until then no flying on Shining.

BHPA Members ONLY have £2,000,000!

When was the last time an accident involving paragliders/hang-gliders required more than £2M insurance??

Answers on a postcard to Lord Derby's estate please.

TURIN:

bad news indeed...but what do RC modellers require for 3rd Party? Perhaps a talk with their insurers might be useful?
