Question GA In Russia

Has anyone taken GA into Russia (touring, specific visit, business purposes etc.) and if so where is the best source for VFR charts?

Slightly off track but i would suggest a chat to the Air Attache at the Russian Embassy as a good start

Remember they still publish their charts and maps with whole cities hidden or shifted 50 miles...to confuse the enemy...the fact that we can see them by satellite clearly hasn't quite sunk in yet

Most major towns and cities have good flying clubs, mainly local equipment such as Yak-18, microlights and gliders

Try single trip plan with Jepps or contact below.

Good luck.

PM me if you have problems.

Suggest you check the topo charts on the National Geographic map site for example (or similar)...and then check the comparative satellite image...particularly for areas 1000 km's east of Moscow and beyond and i can name and place several still hidden closed areas/towns which are not on the charts.

A member of staff recently spotted their city of 500K people moved 50km's from its actual position on a supposedly up to date map on the Nat. Geog. site (echoed on a few other charts as well)...another staff member comes from a closed town, pop. 60K people outside of the City of Penza which does not appear on many local and international maps. The town is known as 'START' aka 'Zarechny' here is a useful article displaying both topo charts and sat. pictures...it is a good example of the point.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/wo...nza-19_nuc.htm

The Jep En-Route charts only show from experience (of rifling through a Navigators' bag) about half the ATS routes and navaids actually available and printed on the Russian issued charts...again the comparison is interesting.

The full extent of Chkalovskaya airport 'Star City' and associated complexes just outside MOW is not fully shown on Russian local topo maps but again is clear on the satellite images. You need local knowledge/experience to spot the differences...on many local civil charts the airport does not even exist along with the special railway line serving it...and on and on...
