Costly diversion

Seems like this could have been handled better...

Hawaiian Airlines plane diverted over blanket row

A Hawaiian Airlines flight from Las Vegas to Honolulu has been diverted because of a row over a blanket.

A passenger had asked for the wrap because he was cold, and was outraged when he was asked to pay $12 (£9.80).

Police said the man, 66, said he "would like to take someone behind the woodshed for this", which the pilot deemed threatening and then ordered the plane be diverted to Los Angeles.

No crime had been committed, police added.

1. Chilling the cabin and then charging for blankets is extorsion

2. From the information provided I'd say the aircrew rather over-reacted, but then I wasn't there so I can't be certain.

No mention of blanket fees here, either:

Hawaiian Airlines - List of All Fees

A bit of cabin crew private enterprise ?

Was the fee for rental of the blanket or purchase?
I would have paid it and left with it.

It appears that a 'blanket and pillow' set can be bought at the on-board 'Pau Hana' snack bar - for $10...https://www.hawaiianairlines.com/our...hana-snack-bar .

But what if you only want a blanket for the flight?

Hardly the 'authentic Hawaiian hospitality' of which the airline brags...

Come on guys, you want CHEAP, then you have to pay for any extras. Don't like it? Then pay up and fly with a decent airline!

In my view the diversion was a serious matter and as such I'll leave it to the airline to decide if it was in their best interest,

With the latest post of a blanket and pillow set for sale in a published on-board catalog, then I side with the airline insisting that it was not free.

The rest of the story is not equally visible as to who said what to whom and I will be willing to guess if the thread gets moved to JetBlast

meanwhile just the story of this getting out hurts the airline as much as the diversion.

True, but it would be interesting to get more of these details. A flight crew diverting an aircraft because a senior citizen complains to the airline about treatment from the cabin crew raises some serious questions. I'm all for safety first, but safety first does not equal egos first.

This story, as it was written in the media, would suggest this is more a case of ego first rather than safety first. But then again, the media are not exactly know for their thorough reporting of aviation related stories.

Some reports are saying that the supposedly objectionable sentiments were expressed, not to the crew, but to the airline rep to whom the guy was speaking on the phone.

Were that me, and were complaint justified, I'd have told the crew that I would write in and complain, I would perhaps leave negative review(s), I wouldn't have insinuated that I wanted to take them behind a wood shed and beat the cr@p out of them!

Spirit Airlines is a no frills U.S. carrier.
$100 per checked bag.
$35 per carry on.
Food and bev onboard is costly.
So I was a passenger going to Detroit one evening.
Arriving at the gate, the crew obviously shut down the APU before the EPU was plugged in..
and the cabin went dark.
Someone yelled "turn on the lights".
Without missing a beat, someone else screamed "That'll be $10" !!
