And in the meantime suspicious lads are able to by firearms at will and shoot up bars in Orlando while at the same time vast amounts of people are employed by that city's airport making sure you don't have more than 100ml of any liquid or gel on you in any one container.

Unbelievable.

Insulin pumps are worn externally with a catheter subcutaneously attached to the body. A pacemaker is internal and would not be noticed by security.

My wife had a kindle fried by a security machine at Munich. Amazon guesses it was static electricity built up by the conveyor and not the x-rays themselves. I suppose this is a danger for machines like an IPump - you don't want to fry the processor which could lead to no insulin (bad) or unregulated amounts (even worse).

I'm about to experiment with a continuous glucose monitor which is attached to the body in a similar way. I can hardly wait to go through security.

The standard advice (as you know) is to get doctors letters and notify the airline in advance. You cannot notify the airport because they never listen/read/hear anything ...

I know a pacemaker is internal. Does it not set off the arch and show on X-ray? How does one prove it is functional and needed?

IBMJunkman,

Pacemakers are quite distinctive on an X-ray, normally placed in the left upper chest wall with one or two wires being placed in the heart. Not all pacemakers funtion all the time, it depends on how they are programmed. To interogate the pacemaker a secialst piece pf hospital equipment is required.

You aren't allowed to go through the arch if you are wearing a pacemaker as it can dangerously interfere with the pacemaker's functioning. You will have an internationally recognised certificate to identify yourself to airport security and you simply offer yourself for a manual search.

WTMD

The Smiths units we use are said by the manufacturer to be pacemaker safe, however if pax prefer not to use then we do a pat down with pax permission of course. Regarding Insulin pumps a simple external swab will be sufficient no need to remove and can be done in a private room if required.
