Luggage question

I have a paid and ticketed return trip coming up this summer from BRU - LHR - MIA - TLH.
Something has arisen that will now require me to fly to BHD on the day of my return to BRU.
Rather than book a ticket from BRU to BHD, is it acceptable when I check in at TLH for my return leg, to ask them if I can pick up my luggage at LHR instead and miss my connection to BRU, flying onto BHD after arriving at LHR?
Will airlines, in this case AA/BA, allow you to pick up your hold luggage at any transiting airport and not the ticketed destination?
Grateful for any advice.

Iain

Iain,
The normal practice would be to check your bag through from TLH to BRU. You could ask at check-in for them to check it only to LHR but there is no guarantee that they would do so, particularly if your ticketed connection is only an hour or two.

I'd call the airline, explain the situation, and see if they would agree to change your ticket to terminate at LHR (or even BFS). As the price for a BRU-TLH-BRU ticket is likely lower than a BRU-TLH-LHR ticket they might ask for the higher fare, but that is what you would have paid had you chosen that itinerary at the beginning.

Good luck

The easiest way around it that is guaranteed to work is if you have a flexible ticket change the LHR-BRU flight to the next day showing a stopover at LHR then your bags will just be checked through to London.
