L39 Albatross runway excursion YSBK

YSBK is closed due to an Albatross overshooting 11C.

It appears to have rejected takeoff just prior to rotate. Fire fighters on scene due fuel spillage.

Fortunately contained within aerodrome perimeter.

Didn't then ban L39's from there or was that just a specific operator?

Of course, the dodgy Australian press are reporting it as a crash.

Idiots.

BK is closed though.

I dunno, I'm no fan of the press at the best of times, but if I'd gone skating through the scenery at YSBK and ended up on my belly on the grass, I'd be calling it a crash too.

"What kind of plane is it?"

"Is it a Mig?"

"We don't know, but we have to report something, so just make it up. Tell them its a Mig"

Ah the marvels of the modern media.

If Maverick and Goose did not know the difference between a Mig and an F-5E Tiger II what chance has a SMH reporter?

Wasnt a crash landing, but loss of steering control on take off, ran into grass beside strip, leading to gear collapse.

heard it live from ATC.

Guys.
It's a crash.
The plane's smashed and off the runway.
Qualifies as far as I'm concerned.
And Damo from Ch9 got it spot on in his live'r.
"An L-39 Albatross, manufactured in the 1970s..."
Bloody shame - beautiful jet - but can bite the unwary in flight from what I've read?

Is that relevant if it crashed on take-off?

Not the first one to inspect the grass off the BK runway either, there was one who did it after a high-speed taxi test in the 90s. it failed.

There was one at Goulburn and another at Bathurst; but which one checked the grass at BK?

The damage is surprisingly minimal, wont be long before its flying again, nose cone worn, main gear doors missing, and worn through the tip tank, nothing major apart from those.

Great to hear - the more fast pointy things there are in the sky, the better.

Unless of course we're talking about QANTAS and QF1, then it's just an incident!

Folks,
I was waiting for Bangkok Golfer to come up.
At least, after the rebuild, VH-OJH was the best performing (lowest fuel delta) in the fleet, and the only one that needed zero rudder trim in cruise.

"..the only one that needed zero rudder trim in cruise."

Perhaps a small, fortuitous bend to the fuselage?

Or, perhaps, the usual OEM variations were straightened out. Fact remains that, after the excursion, it was the best performing airframe in the Qantas -400 fleet.

Only whingers on pprune ( and the ever present QF bashers) ever got their nickers in a twist about James' claims it was only an "incident".

Tootle pip!!
