CASA Class 2 Medical - Australia

Hi,

Im interested in the process of obtaining a class 2 medical for CASA. I would like to know what actually happens with the DAME. Is it just a medical questionnaire? Is there any physical examination(clothes off etc)? and what is the difference between a DAME and DAME2?

Any light you can possible shed from start to finish. Sorry if this has been covered before, but I couldn't find anything through the search.

Pretty simple procedure. I did my first one a year ago. On the scales (close eyes), questionnaire, check balance, check reflexes, pee in cup, check eyesight (I wear contacts), check blood pressure, from memory that was about it.

There are a few serious questions to answer, anything relating to alcohol consumption needs careful thought.

Go to the CASA website, follow the links to CASR Part 67, it's all pretty much in there - standards, things that could preclude you from holding a medical etc

Good start point anyhow. Hearing, ECG? Not sure if they're required for class 2 initial, I've only done Class 1, but look in the regs anyway and it should become clear.

Don't admit to anything. Ever used codeine? No, you haven't.

I "admitted" to "using" codeine after I'd broken a rib and it was recommended by a doctor. That was interpreted by the DAME as me admitting an opiate addiction. I had to pay a few hundred dollars for drug tests to prove I wasn't high before I could get a medical.

How much alcohol do you consume? One or two drinks a week. Never more than three in a session. You've definitely never had a hangover at work. You've definitely never consumed enough to make you forget parts of the night. You've never consumed alcohol because you felt sad.

Thanks for the replies guys......

My main concern is the issue of taking off my shirt. I have a tatt from the old days, which I am quite ashamed of now. It's very inappropriate and I really don't want to go through the trouble of having to explain my self to the DAME etc. I won't be discussing the tatt on the forum either. But would appreciate a heads up before hand.

So basically I want to know if part of the medical is for them to see you partially undressed?

FFS Newbie, harden up. It's just a medical to assess your fitness to fly! It's not a beauty pageant.
The DAME is not going to care less what you look like. You think a tat is the worst they've seen?

There's one really important thing to know about Medicals, and without this massively important detail sorted out, you'll never hold a class 2.

It's usually related to your gluteus maximus area and is the final requirement before a DAMES will send your medical to CASA for approval:

It's accessing your back pocket and paying your DAME the appropriate fee

Seriously though, relax - a class 2 is a simple affair and you'll have nothing to worry about if you're not dying and can cough up the dough at the end

Class (act) 2

Had one once that lasted about 7 mins and 45 sec.
The leading Q as I came in thru the door was " You look well !!"
Pleased to hear that, but after a read the card, a quick pee in a jar and a 15 sec test of that out the back by the doc, he wrote my height as weight and weight as height.!

Did I ever get a query from the CAsA Med(dlers) how a 75 cm midget weighing in at over 300lbs could even get in an aircraft. Alas no.

They both already have yr money, so who gives a ...

It is simple, but the guy I go to now gives me a very good work over, atho the cost is now in multiples of what it used to be.
Good check up, good value..at the doc end.
The top example was a total WOFTAM.

Stay healthy and fly safe.
