Ferry Flight Archerfield to Darwin
Hey all,
In the next few weeks I will be ferrying a C210 from Archerfield to Darwin.
Does anyone have any hints on what route to take? Or where the best spots are to overnight?
Any info is appreciated.

Straightest line possible with range in mind.
Darwin-Mt Isa- Charleville-Brisbane.
I have done that in one day several times, BUT if you want to overnight, maybe
Longreach?

Make a fun trip of it!
Overnight for two nights, do a Google search of places to stop - you may not pass by those places again, so take the opportunity for a look-see while you are doing the ferry flight.

Depends on your time, objectives and money. Personally, I would want to pay extra to take in some of the sights rather than just make it a direct flight.
For more expensive but non-mainstream stops worth a looksee, you could consider Adels Grove, Barkly Homestead (has fuel).
I had a spectacular day's flying along the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria (e.g. Burketown - Boroloola. The rivers are huge and the flats make for spectacular photos. Pretty remote though if you aren't sure of the engine's maintenance history.
A lot of people take scenic flights around Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land around Jabiru and I quite liked stopping in there and at the neighbouring Cooinda Airstrip.
If you've been to Adels Grove, I would give Katherine (Tindal) a miss but some like it.

If this is a real ferry flight, it is as RENURPP stated, shortest distance fewest stops, (least engine/flight time), you have a responsibility to the owner to preserve value and not place unneccessary costs on them. Two stops max, maybe Emerald and bourketown.
Take 3 qts of oil, 4 if you dont know the aircraft or the owner. Make a funnel from an old oil or soft drink bottle, stuff a decent sized rag in it.
Check the MR to ensure it has sufficient hours remaining for the trip plus a margin so it will be clean en route to destination.
A. If you are being paid for it:
Do it in a day, leave very early. Take a cut lunch, a big bottle of water, three red bulls and a good novel or at least a small usb music device. Also you may need an empty 4 litre fruit juice bottle.
Do not take huge flightbag with complete jepps etc etc. Take only what's needed and a few extra options. ipad mini with OR.
In flightbag ( or better yet backpack) also have flashlight, space blanket, insect repellant, change of jox and sox, small packet of baby wipes, some bluetack, half a roll of black insulation tape, half a dozen assorted cable ties, a couple of ball point pens, a lightweight jacket with plenty of pockets, deoderant, toothbrush and room for your headset all within airline carry on weight allowance, except for jacket which you can wear, and fill pockets with stuff as needed (novels etc),
Wear long pants, jeans/cargos. No need for white shirt with eppaulettes.
Dont forget ASIC, the DN mob are ID Nazis.
Dont take super duper exxy leatherman, buy a $10 buck elcheapo multitool, leave it with the plane.
Be prepared to be stuffed about by the RAAF ATC in Darwin, are you LAHSO?
If you are paying the fuel on a refund basis make sure your CC has plenty on it (a couple of K at least) as the Shell swipe bowsers can hold a lot of money for several days. Otherwise you will need Shell carnet from someone who buys a zillion litres a week, or otherwise get operator owner Credit Card and PIN.
Turn in your invoice same day you arrive, demand payment prior to handing the keys over. You met your commitment now they need to pony up.
Catch evening flight back to Brissy, carry on bag only. Keep accommodation and meals money for next endo.
Pay your cc and expenses as soon as you get your hands on the $$$ before they hit hard a few days later.
Better yet, take someone who wants to build hours and do them a favour, make them pay their own expenses and air fare home, and charge them for the opportunity to clock up some time! (Also to protect the Part 48 obligations)

B. If however you have shonked some luckless sod (friend/ acquainence) into letting you do this as a personal favour ( by you) on an expenses only basis and you are treating it as a jolly:
Get on Prune and seek guidance form dozens of people you dont know, many of whom have many many hours on Flight Sim.
Go for it as suggested, take a few days, maybe a week and have agood old tour around. Make sure old mate has deep pockets. Make sure you also have the owners/operators credit card as you will be needing that for the Shell fuel bowsers as mentioned.Take a couple of bogan mates and an esky and get them to chip in (i.e. Pay for) the accommodation and shout the pilot's grog. Heaps of great places to get on the amber neck oil once out in the GAFA. Make sure it had a 50hrly before you leave AF as you dont want to have to pay for one in Alice Springs, and take a few extra litres of oil along. Overall this should cost the owner only about twice as much as option A. but be heaps of fun for you

If the object is to get the aeroplane up there with the minimum of fuss and bother, then for me, Archerfield - Longreach - Burketown - Darwin has the best combination of well spaced legs, interesting flying, fuel availability, lunch etc.
It's a big days flying - equal to my best in the V-tail (Townsville to Broome). Longreach would be an interesting stopover if you haven't been there before.

It's a little off topic, but has anyone gone Perth to Sydney in the one day in a piston? I have done it once in a 31 and once in a 34, but there's so much d!(king around at each stop, it tends to be a very long day! I think going east might be easier, but it could all be in my mind!

AF - LRE - MA - TN - DN.
Depending on winds and fuel burn, you may get MA - DN in one hop.
Food, accomo and maintenance at all stops except TN.

Take a swag. That way you aren't pushed into a corner to continue on, if the day goes pear shaped. Bring some non perishable foods/drink for the trip plus a half day or so if you fall behind.
A full carton of oil would be useful - you just never know.
A USB battery would be handy - recharge mobile phones etc.
Remember your 20.11 obligations re: remote areas.
Beware that "Pitch Black" is about to kick off and that may have implications on you with re: airspace around TN and DN.
It is a fun trip that I've done in the same type before. Some spectacular terrain along the way.

I have done the Nullabor both ways a number of times in a Chieftain, BK-Albany-BK and CNK-JT return.
I was young, foolish and under self-imposed pressure to generate revenue/kick goals, although it was technically a private op.
It was about 10 hours flying and 14 hours duty westbound and 8 hours flying/12 hours duty eastbound.
I have done the Nullabor both ways a number of times in a Chieftain, BK-Albany-BK and CNK-JT return.
I was young, foolish and under self-imposed pressure to generate revenue/kick goals, although it was technically a private op.
It was about 10 hours flying and 14 hours duty westbound and 8 hours flying/12 hours duty eastbound.
If you're gunna do that sort of flying, you should either
A) be well paid , or
B) have a hoot doing it
I've had some of the best flying between Cairns and Darwin and also some of the most crappy " wish I was on the ground" flying in the same area.
Don't get caught out by last light if you are not suitably experienced.
Also, Make sure there is a strip available to you if TS makes further progress undesirable ( think about lighting etc if you have to turn back).
