SOAR Aviation - YMMB
Hi guys ,
Looking to convert my ticket to RAA.
Does anyone have any info on SOAR at Moorabbin ? They seem ton have good rates for there Jabirus and GA.
Does anyone hire or learn with them?
Any information will be good.

No info on soar but keep in mind the part 61 changes coming up.... GFPT will convert to a RPL, don't think you'll need to convert for RA just probably take a check flight with whoever you're hiring from to make sure you're not gonna kill someone.
A Part 61 Rec licence probably won't cover you for RAAus, but, so if you want to fly an aircraft with a Postcode instead of a Rego you will still have to convert

You'll still likely have to do the 5 hours conversion to RAA. Part 61 helps you go the other way to upgrade but not GA to RAA. Happy for it to be pointed out if I am incorrect. RAA is a seperate entity so until such time that they change their ops manual there would be no automatic change come part 61 time.
If you are GA now, part 61 doesn't really help you much in saving on cost other than being able to utilise the drivers licence medical and that was available before part 61 anyway.
The 5 hours conversion prepares you for high drag low inertia machines amongst other things. That 5 hours is not necessarily dual.
That aside, if you are a weekend 152 or 172 pilot you will struggle to fly a Jabiru at first and would probably take a couple of hours minimum to be comfortable yourself let alone convincing them you are safe to take their aircraft solo. It's not rocket science however they fly quite differently and are less forgiving than a 172. You will likely enjoy flying a relatively new aircraft versus a 30 year old one.

Hi,
I am currently learning to fly out of SOAR and they are a fantastic mob to go through your Pilot certificate in RA-Aus. I have completed my first solo recently and plan to finish off my solo command to get the certificate. I did my first 2 hours with Chris at Oasis and didn't quite like the environment in his office. Oasis didnot have the exemption on which Soar operated where they can actually send students solo in the class d airspace tower hours. Oasis can only send the students solo in the circuit or the training area outside tower hours i.e CTAF which would only be at 6am in the morning. Thank goodness I don't have to wake up this early. This was one of my main consideration when I decided to move over to SOAR. I heard that they started another flying school in Bankstown under the same exemption or something and if you planed to convert into GA they I think started training in GA aswell. I dont plan converting as I am happy with my jabaru.

Love the post spitfire1989 or is it Lynton perhaps? So how long have you been instructing at Soar for? Seems that every thread where Soar is mentioned, out come these one post wonders harping on about how great the school is.

Their exemption to operate an RA-Aus aircraft in Class D airspace is ONLY valid while training. So once you have your pilot cert. pax endo and cross country endo it's illegal to fly at YMMB.
NB: "Legally" you could never take a passenger for a flight leaving from/going to YMMB because it's impossible to take a passenger and call it a "training flight" in a two seater aircraft.

Indeed you are correct Pilot25, however it's is only "illegal" as you put it when the tower is operating. Come summer when there is lots of daylight you are good to go as long as you don't mind getting out of bed early!
