That's it Capn, this thread is locked!

Err, wait a minute. Damn, I'm not a mod.

But seriously, I'm with you. I agree with most edits made by mods like Tailwheel there are some inconsistencies for sure.

I often visit this forum, and have frequented quite a few others over the years, and I've never seen a forum with so many closed threads with no real explanation or purpose as this one.

Some mods would appear to make good AFL umpires... the forum is not about you!!!!

Pffftt, I can point you to an aviation forum with more closed and moderated threads than you've had hot dinners!

Prune is moderated very well but admittedly the airship one did take me by surprise too....

Capt Fathom, I am the initiator of the thread Pilot Training in Sydney. It appears odd that I am not allowed to ask the question regarding recommendations yet I can be pointed to other threads on the same topic that are still open. This together with the brusque responses (still helpful though) I feel like I am treading on eggshells. I expect these comments will probably now get this thread closed, so I apologise ahead of time if that is the case.

Truthinbeer, it's been covered dozens of times before by the moderators. There is little if not no point in asking on here about flying schools. You get a barrage of first-time posters offering their advice and a flood of ex students saying how good the schools are. When the moderators check behind the scenes to the level of email and IP addresses, it turns out that most of those posters work for those schools - hardly an impartial point of view!

The trick is to head there yourself, talk with the school and make your decision based on the information that you have.

A better approach if you decide that you need to ask a bunch of strangers over the Internet, would be to ask about a particular school versus simply asking "which school in Sydney is best?"

truth in beer (beer is your friend) just play the game mate. Every time the thread is closed open another, then when you get banned join under another user name (from a different computer). You may have to visit a couple of internet kiosks though

Thank you for the responses Jack and VH-XXX (you need another X in there). I do not wish to hijack Capt Fathom's thread and appreciate the extra advice VH. I actually got a really good sense of direction from the links to old threads that Track5 posted, so it wasn't a complete failure. I understand now what you are suggesting VH.......pilots wouldn't really do that would they?

Instructors want your business, why wouldn't they? Anything to build the student base, clock up some hours and get the heck out of the flying school and into an airline. Who can blame them? it's the circle of life in the aviation world.

You don't need to go to an internet kiosk, just delete all cookies and clear your cache once you've set up a new username

I hope that's not how you commit your Internet crime PaperBoy!

Ever heard of an IP address?

What Is My IP Address - Shows Your IP Address

Strangely, every computer has one and this is how / why the police come knocking on your door when you do wrong!

What about your MAC address and Computer name, are you changing those too when you sign up as someone else???

Hahah, you ARE funny!

Regardless, perhaps a sticky needs to be made, called "Looking for a flying school? You need not look further than here"

Simply put this text in the body of the post:
"Go have a look yourself and don't pay upfront

use the search function"

Well, that's not quite right either - an IP address is associated with the network equipment that connects you to the Internet, not the computer itself. And in most home networks they are not permanent. So web sites like PPrune can't identify your computer/location exactly - only your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can. Only with evidence of a crime and a duly obtained subpoena will ISPs release this information, and then only to authorized law enforcement. At least this is the process in countries with a strong rule of law, this doesn't necessarily apply in North Korea!

So, forum moderators can attempt to ban you by IP address, but if you can work out how to change your IP address, the ban would not be effective. Depending on the ISP setup, it is often possible to refresh your network equipment (e.g. router) and get a new IP address. This is a quite simple process but I won't post details here. In addition, you have a different IP address for each ISP/network that you connect to - so if you connect from free wifi in airports, or use different home or office Internet connections, your IP will be different.

Free wifi connections in cafes/airports/trains/etc., are a good way to participate on the Internet without much traceability since generally you don't have to provide verified personal information to use these connections. This is an important public safety/security aspect of wifi hotspots that is often under-discussed. It's just like the old days of using a pay phone to commit a crime instead of your home phone.

Moderators of course need to be aware of this too because the old IP, the one that got banned, could well end up assigned to a totally different, innocent person. If they subsequently tried to register on PPRuNe they would be inappropriately banned.

I have been told that some forum sites can also record the MAC address of the device used to connect, so wherever and however you connect, the MAC address remains the same. Does anyone know if this is true?

If this were true, then the only solution would be to use a borrowed machine such as in an internet cafe.

If you want to know about idiotic moderation how about a website where I posted : "Having done this, I felt a total prat"
They changed prat to 'fool'.

Then there's those that won't let you say anything about a Pakistani nightwatchman in Scunthorpe.

Capetonian - your MAC address travels no further than your router (the little box you plug the phone line into) - it is only used for talking device to device. Most of the times you hear about someone getting busted by MAC address it would be if they used a wireless LAN (probably illegally) and the wireless router captured their machines MAC address, hence identifying them.

For a website to get your MAC they would need to break the security most browsers provide and steal it from your machine (i.e malware or virus like activity). Cookies and IP address are pretty much all a web server can use to identify you. There are some tools out there that can go above that and identify you from other patterns, but they would be beyond the capabilities of most web monkeys.

Your MAC address is a globally unique value and is a permanent part of each network device you have.
Depending on the actual device and the software you use, it may be possible to temporarily change the MAC address that gets sent across the network medium.

Think of several people receiving snail-mail at a dwelling., the IP address gets you to the dwelling and the MAC address is for a specific person within that dwelling.

With the gradual rollout of IPv6, it will become possible for every networked device to have a globally-unique and permanent IP address. (How this will get managed is another can of worms)

I think a LOT of posters in here ask this same Q on a reg basis. But some free advice guys/gals. Leave it alone. I have said it b4 these mods will bury you, (I've been threatened b4 even to the point where they would ban anyone from my work place using the same IP addy) you won't win!!! Maybe there's some brown paper bag exhanges going on under the table with this lot
Either way we live in a democratic society right?

Perhaps they should change the name of this thread to "Network Q&A?" or "How to get past the Mods with your IP/Cache/Cookies"

I have had the same IP for over a year now, I can however change it at the drop of a hat. It's not hard. Not in the slightest.
