Positions for CRFOs were advertized internally today. All group pilots including VARA eligible..
So it looks like externals get whatever's left over once internal spots are filled.

Yep, I was told possibly 1 or 2 externals will be taken for the 777, so don't hold your breath. Also I have no idea what happened to the planned VANZ course, it just disappeared without a trace. I suspect it moved back internally as well.
The days of the hold file are numbered now, that's for sure.

Just to push this back up a bit...
Anyone have any idea of time to command? Any expectation of it changing (for better or worse) with integration into Virgin's list and possibility of internal movement?
Cheers

To match the context of the thread my 50 year figure was based on guys joining the group now, based on the number of commands awarded the past 18 months. Of course it's been pretty dead recently so a return to normality would bring that down... Say to 15-20 years. 😝

That's looking backwards. History gives scant indication for time to command. At present, there are some 1150 pilots in VAA/VAI, just over half are SFO/FO/SOs; say 620.
Do the math. At 30 commands/per year that's 20 years to command for a new join. Maybe less, maybe more. At 50 commands/per year, thats 12 years.
The influence of VARA and VANZ complicates things. VARA still pigheaded in their demand for its senior pilots to go to the top of DoJ list, it ain't gonna happen. Current FOs at each group have the their command vacancies ring-fenced in their division, except the B777 SFOs who get B777 command by-pass pay in 2016.
New joiners will go to bottom of list with no command protection expectations in their division, is my prediction.
I'm sure that the industrial goal posts will be moved by those who seek advantage at the expense of others. Again.

For those who are so concerned about time to command, why don't you look at say Tigerair? Probably not as long of a wait there.
I'm surprised that so many people are still willing to wait for Virgin. Once you get in, the career progression will basically be non-existant.

People yet to join already concerned about time till command!
Bloody hell....

Tigerair have had recruitment open several times in the last couple of years. Or you could perhaps even ring them up and ask about current recruitment.
So you can't tell me that they aren't/haven't been hiring in the time you've been on the hold file at Virgin.
I'm not criticising, I'm just trying to offer alternatives.

I know one person who joined Tiger less than 5 months ago, so they have been recruiting this year.
2015 will be another year of changes at Virgin Australia. think those who are saying the growth will be at VARA will be wrong. With the plan to integrate the ATR's within VA, VARA's (A320, F100 and F50) growth will slow or perhaps stop. Yes there will be more ATR's and the need for more pilots, but this will be done under VAA AOC. On top of this, VANZ will be gone and VAI will have an expanded B737 fleet operating the old VANZ routes.
So those looking at joining VAA, I see the future entry points via the ATR, B777 CRFO or VAI B737 (New Zealand) based.
For those worried about getting a command, it's a very strong possibility that your first command at VAA will be on the ATR. Yes itz's nice to have a command on a jet, but it's not the end if the world if you don't get one. There are FO's on the B777, A330 and even the B737, that make just about the same money as an Ejet Captain without all the responsibility. In fact a couple of Ejet Captains gave up their commands for FO slots on the B777 and they say they being a B777 FO is far better than being an Ejet Captain.
