ATPL Night Hour Requirement

G'day folks,

Forgive me living underneath a rock but I always believed that the night flight time required for the issue of an ATPL was:

(d) at least 100 hours of flight time at night.

Looking on the CASA website it seems CAR 5.172 was altered (last year) to read:

(d) at least 100 hours of flight time at night as pilot in
command or as co-pilot.

I just wan't to clarify, does this mean the 100 hrs can be made up of a combination of command/co-pilot night time? Would the co-pilot night time have to be halved in this case? (i.e would need 200 hrs co-pilot to satisfy the 100 hr requirement)

Cheers

Yes you are correct. Mixture is ok and co-pilot time is halved.

Cheers

Hard one.

It just says "flight time" not "total experience" hence why I am inclined to say that the Coey time would not require halving.

ie: total straight Capt and FO time added together.

Keep reading... 5.173

(8) Each period of flight time flown by a person as a pilot, but not
flown:
(a) as pilot in command; or
(b) as pilot acting in command under supervision; or
(c) in dual flying;
must be halved in calculating the person’s flight time for the
purposes of regulation 5.172.

My understanding and interpretation is that all night hours count even dual; ICUS and CoPilot.

Edit:

Copy about 5.173. Thanks Kalavo

Dual no longer counts - that was the change to the regs in December.

ICUS while not specifically mentioned in the regs (only command and copilot is mentioned) does count. This has been confirmed with CASA.

You already have internet access. CARs are effectively free. Buy the kids another Junior Burger

The CASA website is fine (or should I specify the Attorney General website) but I still reach for my out-of-date Regs first and then confirm on the website. Paper is just easier sometimes.

Damnation, those bloody night hours are so hard to get and CASA effectively just took away 15 (the dual).

Knock Knock!
Whos there ?

ok enough we can see where I am going.

Intresting point though, wonder how some of those guys that got hired last year by some unmentioned regional whos name starts with R and ends in X when we could not get enough Pilots would stand.

Quick progression mimimum hour to hold an ATPL but been there long enough to get a command. ( not really min hours to get a command I know but the reality is in OZ most guys strugle to get the night hours )

Why do CASA effectively abolish the command requirements of an ATPL yet make the night requirement more difficult? You would think that the 500 command requirement should have been the requirement that should have been made the hardest one to get not the night requirement.

The IF was the hardest to get for me, as if you log IF legit, its quite sparing for the ole instructor.

Does anyone know if 100h in FFS towards 1500TT for ATPL license can also be towards 500h MCC? I have 400h TT MCC and have a chance to unfreeze, but don't know if I can't. Help appreciated.

Sorry, don't understand your question. What is it that's frozen that you want to melt? I don't think simulated night conditions in a FFS (flight sim?) counts for anything.

Folks,
Am I missing something obvious here ---- or are we now dealing with CASR Part 61 plus MOS, plus lots and lots more advisory/explanatory material and growing.
Come September, it will be the first anniversary of Part 61.
Hopefully, there will not be a second, in its present form.
Tootle pip!!

Pilat,

Part 61 changed to co-pilot logging, there is no longer a requirement to half co-pilot time. Co-pilot is now logged one for one, even for total aeronautical experience.
