Aircraft down in Pittwater?

Just heard over the news someone gone down in Pittwater? No news on crew?

Light plane crashes on Sydney beach

19/02/2008 10:23:00 AM.

A light plane has crashed into Pittwater on Sydney's northern beaches, emergency services say.

An ambulance spokeswoman said the crash was reported at 9.35am (AEDT).

The plane was reported to have crashed into Pittwater, just off Stokes Point at Avalon.

The ambulance service said paramedic crews and the ambulance helicopter had been sent to the scene.

Early reports suggested the pilot was out of the plane but his or her condition was unknown, it said.

Looks like it was an amphibian Trike microlight, possibly a Ramphos (fibreglass dinghy with a hanglider wing). It has an undercarriage that seemed to be extended from the pictures of the upturned fuselage on the news... Good to hear the pilot swam away!

Grade-A quote;

Quote:
A Pittwater Council worker who witnessed the operation to salvage the plane says the pilot was lucky.

"The whole thing was submerged," Carl Yakich told AAP. "He was probably lucky to survive."

The plane crashed about 100 metres offshore in about 21 metres of water, Mr Yakich said.

"They go pretty fast these ultralights. It tore the first few wheels off, so it must have gone down plop (plop)."

Gooday

It happened near my house at palm beach on the other side of stokes point...just along from clareville beach. I didn't see it happen but I saw the rescue chopper along with channel 7 and 9 choppers. It was one of those ultralights with a hanglider wing on an inflatable boat. Don't know exactly how it happened. Was maybe 10 or 11 in the morning.
