Africa, Central and northern South America, Melanesia. All the old English, Dutch, Spanish, French ex colonies haven't exactly improved themselves since Independence. Aid money is cheaper than recolonisation and isn't as offensive to the the left. Australia's $1b a year to the Pacific is a drop in the pond of what is needed, but is culturally, politically and socially acceptable.

George Constantinou

Hi everyone,

For those of you that remember Theresa (my ex wife) she was very good friends with George and she has advised me that George's body is being flown back to Brisbane tomorrow and his funeral service will take place on Monday 10.00 am @ West End Greek Orthodox Church (St Georges Church).

Regards,

Colin Rutherford

Airtam-Tapini Hotel

I can categorically state no hotel or guest house at Tapini unlike Woitape. Father Brian of the CM would arrange accomm/meals at the mission. A very good CM High School also. Hotel was burnt! There are 3 or 4 trade stores and a haus sick. Airlines PNG provide a RPT service and the famous strip now serviced on a charter basis also by POM operators. Still an Anson radial engine beside the strip, but no remnants of the many casualties in more recent times.

sundaun; If my memory serves me correctly Dennis Douglas did have a lodge at Tapini similar to the one at Woitape, but it was well and truly closed for business even when I started with Dz in January 1990.

Had many a good cup of coffee at the Woitape lodge between flights and can remember one certain Dz Pilot who quite often used to be 'caught on ground at Woitape due weather' which enabled him to stay overnight!

Someone eventually twigged to what was going on and word came down from on-high that the next time it happened there had bloody well be bad weather there!!

The lady on page 83

Definitely Dawn! Think we were havin' a bit of a party in the Ansett mess at Madang probably 1972. Buggered if I can remember what for... did we ever have a reason?
From the shakety memory, they were on an overnight in Madang after most of the crews has moved to Moresby and there were still enough of us to remain at the Ansett Mess.
When we got down to four DC3 pilots I got biffed into a flat along with "Boots" the TAA mess dog that had been handed over to us when their's closed down in 71? or early 72. He was a great fighter that dog. Came second in most bouts and always had the old fightin' scar on the top of his head opened up. Looked like a pink tongue flappin and gettin pussy for a fortnight before it got better... no vet in Madang and Boots didn't like flyin' to Moresby for treatment. Generally escaped in the luggage locker and alarmed poor oli when he opened the door. Ever seen oli runnin' backwards at thirty knots across a tarmac with a black projectile inches from his mug.
I see Dawn from time to time in Brisbane. She's still a great wag.
I haven't been lurking here lately Tinny... too busy bein' bad and not lettin' the Mem Sahib know about it.
Off to Perth for a last ride in the DC-3 in a couple of weeks.
I think I've got pictures and footage from every angle outside and from every seat in her, includin' the dunny.
Interesting thing is the different sounds the Video camera has picked up from each row. All beaut 1830 grumbles but "different" as you get further away from them and the wind oozing past gets louder as you sit more aft.

I see today's Posguria reporting that PX Pilot murdered after leaving a major hotel in POM New Year.

Anyone know more? Any news?

Very sad whichever way.

Thumbs down RIP Timothy Houji.

PX Pilot Murdered ?
It was First Officer Timothy Houji.
It happened at the Crowne Plaza Hotel of all places.
Very sad news indeed.

RIP Big Fella.

Sad to advise Sir Dan Leahy passed away in Toowoomba late tonight. He had not been well in recent years. He would have been in his mid 70's.

Dan was founder of Collins & Leahy Ltd and was on the Boards of Steamships Trading Co and Air Niugini for many years. Dan was a nephew of the original pioneering Leahy brothers, Mick, Jim and Dan and younger brother of Markham farmer and former PNG politician, Tom Leahy, who now lives near Dalby, Queensland.

Mendi

I had the good fortune to live and work in Mendi late 60s early 70's. Vividly remember Gumis crashing near Clancys Knob. In fact went out to rescue him. Took his Cessna on the back of my truck to TAL Goroka for repair. Remember Bernie as well, he held the rodeo on my dad's prison football pitch. Sadly Don Morgan passed away some 21 years ago here in Newport Wales. Des Clancy was District Com at that time. I used to bring all the Avgas from Lae to Mendi for TAL in those days. Bob Ivanow was my best mate in those days. Lawrie was TAL station manager. Used to do a lot of flying with TAL myself. Remember the drought and the airdrops of rice with doorless planes and only a rope holding us in for safety. Ron Neville was still around then. We all used to prop the club bar up every evening until shut tap. Remember flying with Peter Arnold on several occasions. One occasion when he has with Ansett I was on a Piaggio with him flying from Hagen to Mendi, the one engine blew up as we were taxing. Also remember going up on Mt Giluwe to recover him on his final departure, sad occasion but Ivanow and I had to take the army up there for the rescue as they had only recently arrived in Mendi so the terrain was new to them. Lot's over other names from that era escape me now.

Hi Andel, as I recall Peter Arnold didn't fly the Piaggio with Ansett.

Correct. Sharpie went on to Pigs in January 1970,later Navajo then Pievan followed by Grouper who went on to the Pilatus first and then on to the Pievan. Patrick Johnson-Bell joined on the Navajo.

Yes, and his other nickname in my Talair Days, was "Fingers" as he was always scratching his rear!

I'm pretty sure it was Alan Rankin had the blown engine taxying at Mendi. Looked a bit like Grouper.

CAC Sabre... My cousin (in Perth) has the slides of the four or five Dc-3s when they were in this scheme in 1977... sounds like they may have changed the scheme if you're looking for the decal on the tail.
