Where are you these days Mate?
Six meters from my heated swimming pool, five meters from my sports car, fifty meters from my twin engine motor cruiser and in that place that is beautiful one day, perfect the next!!!

Ummm, thanks for the update Taily. You of course have managed to raise my blood pressure quite well due envy, but I was actually asking about Luk V.

Should have made myself a bit clearer, shouldn't I?

D.G remembered

That's such sad news Ross.

Some years ago - out of the blue - Dennis phoned me, asking for my postal address as he had some DVD's he wanted to send me.

The 5 discs arrived shortly after and what a treasure trove they are with photographic records from very early PNG aviation in the 1920's to the time he went pinis.

It was only recently while talking to Bev. that I realised I'd not replied to thank him.

I was really crook when I received them.

I hope some others of you have copies.

May Dennis's God look after him.

Noel.

Kainteba

The approach does not resemble the Kainteba I knew in any way.

There was no way an approach could be made that far from its threshold.

The strip I flew into required a continual curved approach from left downwind onto base and onto final using the technique I previously described.

Mebe me lusim tingting.

I think not.

More please.

Sorry aquila audax but looking at that video again and consulting my Douglas Airways one way strip book makes me damn sure that it is Kaintiba.

The strip book lists Kaintiba as
Elev 2000' Length 450 m 16/34

Slope 13.3%

And you are committed from 2,400' on final.

And it was the first strip that Luk V endorsed me into in that province. Kamina was the next one, two days later with Kanabea the same day.

Am checking my old maps and will post further in due course.

Crashed Nomad

Sorry, but that was definitely taken in 1978/79. I took those photos myself, and I was on duty when it happened.

We left PNG to return home to Perth in early 79.

No photoshopping either.

Got me stumped mate.

It has the later radar nose (but early 79 could have been the first of the converted ones - which did not crash at Nadzab) but more importantly I never saw a PNGDF Nomad without markings. It wasn't as though we had a huge fleet and several units operating them to lose track of aircraft - by the time I left at the end of 1980 we only had 3 Nomads (more came later) and I flew each of them probably once a week on average.

Unlike the poor GA blokes who were forced out to Nadzab for operations and only allowed back in to Lae for servicing, in 1980 we were still operating full time out of LAE and PNGDF ATS operations did not shift to Nadzab (in tents) until shortly after then. This unsatisfactory arrangement ended with the move to POM. We did use Nadzab for training occasionally, mainly instrument approaches, but not daily.

There was definitely a Nomad crash at Nadzab after I left (probably this one?) and another into the hills south of Vanimo.

Maybe my memory is shot but something is wrong with the timing and aircraft markings in the photo.

AAAVN full operations (not just maintenance) from the Lae airport went much longer than 1980. I've forgotten the exact date, but it was more like 86 or 87.

on behalf of pinky

Your comment goes over my head.

It seems caustic.

For info I've known Pinky since he was running around in nappies.

Early on he was an absolute feral but when I last met him he displayed the graces of his parents who were so highly regarded in the Barossa Valley.

Please relax, Aquila audax.

There was no offence meant to Pinky and his response shows that.

Did you ever join us for Saturday night dinner at the Truro Hotel after a gliding day at Stonefield, back in the seventies?

(I apologise for thread drift.)

Thread drift on

Aquila audax; It's all cool Mate! gerry111 and I go back all the years he indicates and when I think of it, it's amazing that we all survived some of the things we did way back then!

175km/hr down the Stonefield Rd in our Celicas, (dirt and loose gravel) heading back to the BVGC after dinner and copious amounts of booze at the Truro Pub, and we survived!!

Going spotlighting for rabbits with Cibie driving lights and an assortment of .22 rifles between Mt Mary and Sturt Highway. With WG's Fiance CL cooking up the spoils for our dinners the next night.

The only thing he really did that pissed me off at the time was pinching a Girlfriend off me. Which of course in the end was the best thing that could have happened!

Early on he was an absolute feral
Struth!! Only an absolute feral??

I obviously wasn't trying hard enough!

Desert Flower; Struth DF, and I always thought I was a good boy in your presence! Hell, Jonno used to do his best to keep me in line!!

Yes you were. Always brought me fruit cake. I had a slice with my morning coffee at the local cafe this morning (had to pay $2.50 for it! ) & thought of you while I was eating it.

Hell, Jonno used to do his best to keep me in line!!
Sometimes I used to wonder who was keeping whom in line!

Chimbu Warrior, Yes it was some time after I left. John Marsden might be able to tell you. Unfortunately Lyn Hummerston in whose time the move probably took place is no longer with us.

After having read all 673 pages of reminiscent waffle about your "good old days in PNG", I have decided you are all remarkably soft.

Now when I was up there, the colonial policies of the time included extension of slavery to anyone who didn't have a knighthood and shooting anyone without a twirled moustache and gin and tonic in hand.

Second World War wrecks were yet to grace the landscape, and when they did, they were dime a dozen. Several japs, who refused to believe the war was over, menaced villagers in the hills north of Milne Bay.

Sliced bread was not yet invented, but they were pretty close to a major breakthrough.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why did this funny fella go? Only 5 posts . A 6 month wonder, you might say.

There was on that same page mention of Terry Blythe, ex Brain & Brown.
Jack Mc D , his good mate, still going strong 85 years young.
Working on his Hawker Demon (still)

Is there anyone can give me some dope on Terry Brain ?(shuffled of the mortal coil last November at 90). Doing a little profile on his colourful life for the Rag & Tube magazine. His partner Bill Brown long been pushing them up. Terry was on P40s, and Bill on B24s, so someone said the other day.
