Mission Pilots at Aitape

The pilot third from the left is indeed Gordon Campbell. He owned a C205, P2-KNC. I see from my log book that I ferried it from Moresby to Vanimo 3/9/1975 for Gordon. Stayed overnight at his pub and next day flew him back to Moresby stopping at Angoram and Goroka. He was happy to let me clock up the hours. On climb, at about 5000ft. and above, had fuel vaporization problems and had to use low boost on the fuel pump from time to time to fix the problem. I don't know if this was a problem specific to KNC or a general Cessna 205 problem.

Trousers

He's polishing the Raybans Tinny, disguises all sorts of decadence!! Last saw Eamon at Aerial Tours 69 Wewak. Have an idea he went to TAA. Bro Urban was building a homebuilt up near Sissano and later died. Gordon was a larger than life character (Kiwi) who had the motel at Vanimo and was helped by his brother. A cleancut group!!!

Harro passed away last Wednesday after illness. An aviation "character" who resided in Mt Hagen 35 years running numerous sawmilling and engineering businesses and owning several aircraft. Ian ananomously assisted many expats in PNG but always insisted the details be kept silent. Ian and Noran lived in ADL last coupla years. Condolences to Noran, I'll have a bundy or two for you tonight old Mate. Stap esi.

Question Excerpt from Post Courier 31 August, 2012.

SOEs underMicroscope

THE Government will conduct a review on all seven State Owned Enterprises (SOE) performances, the State Enterprise Minister told the Post-Courier yesterday.
He said not all SOE are performing and the review would be conducted to check on their performances. “I’m now reviewing performance of all SOE’s for all the companies that are performing and not performing.
“Within three months after this exercise, I can come up with clear advice to the cabinet regarding the performance of these SOEs and the necessary steps to take after that”.
Recently, there have been allegations levelled against one, which is the appropriation of funds.
Another State enterprise performance was said to be hampered by poor management and mounting debts.
SOEs are one of the means the Government utilises to participate in the economy, particularly in delivering goods and services to the people. According to a report on developing a corporate governance regime for state owned enterprises in PNG, SOEs are established as separate legal entities and intended to be independent of the government so that they can be efficient and/or profitable, replicating the private sector, in their role in production of goods and delivery of services.
The report said that since Independence in 1975, SOEs have been increasingly facing problems in corporate governance. Some of the problems identified in PNG include situations where procedures are not complied with in appointing and terminating directors and chief executive officers (CEOs), most of which end up in court; responsible ministers, directors or CEOs involved in self-interested activities; cronyism and appointment of political associates and family members as directors and managers who do not have the required competence, i.e. attitude, experience, knowledge, or skills.

Hands up those who reckon it's gonna change .

Regards to ya all, Big E.

Mt Yule cross

After a bit of background info.

As a lot of us know there is a BIG white cross at the top of Mount Yule. Has been there for a long time . I first saw it in 1978 and have been pointing it out to a few of the newbies up here.

One recently asked the history of it and I must admit I do not know it.

Did the google thing with no success

Can someone enlighten me as to who put it up and when? Was also asked how did they get it up there. Buggered if I know.

Anyone????

Have flown past the Mt Yule cross several times but never knew it had a Jean Martin connection. Jean, I think was his real christian name. I also think he was of Swiss heritage. He married a Goilala lady and ran the tradestore in Tapini. Something tells me came to the area as a missionary originally. He was a founding owner of Elomair that started with a C206 and at its height had an Aztec, two C206s and the mighty C402. The other owner was a Dave ??? who was a ginger-beer by trade. Muttly from NCA was their Chief Pilot for many years.

Jean was a real pioneer. I remember he came to Port Moresby one day, bought a Suzuki compact 4WD (what were they called back then?- it had a noisy 360cc two stroke engine) cut it up into bits with a blowtorch and we transported it, bit by bit in the 206 to Tapini where he reassembled it.

Sadly, Jean was murdered in Erime (I think it was called- a strip/village just NW of Tapini that was seldom visited by aircraft). He was assasinated in his footsteps with bushknives. I had the dubious duty of taking cops from POM to investigate with the bloodstained evidence still fresh on the path covered by corrugated iron.

Jean Martin

J B Martin ran coupla C206s out of Erume and surrounding strips. As you said he was a lay Catholic missionary in earlier times. I think MJB was his original, which came to greif near Wau, but was salvaged and rebuilt subsequently. Paul Johnson was killed in the other between Kosipe and Tapini in the other after it became Elomair. I think Dave McDonald was Jean Martin's partner in the later venture. Are you all sure the marker on Mt Yule isn't a trig station!

Dave McDonald is correct-the other owner of Elomair. And it was Erume not Erime Jean was killed at. I remember Pacific Helicopters in their 500s often cancelling SARwatch Mt Yule. What would they be interested in a cross for? Perhaps it was not religious.

The Cross

I think there was a cross further up the Ungabunga on the left near a village on a high point before reaching the Tapini High School.

B24?

I had heard of a cross on Mt Yule but never seen it in the 90s. But I was told it was to commemerate the loss of many lives (more than a normal crew) when a B24 (or similar large bomber) crashed into Mt Yule in WW2, this may be utter nonsense of course and I have never heard any details on such a crash.

Cool

For those interested I have done some further research and discovered that in fact a beacon (as suggested earlier) was indeed erected around 1960.

XNATMAP home page provided all the info plus pictures.

This is the history:

THE DIVISION OF NATIONAL MAPPIMG’S GEODETIC SURVEY OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA – A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE

Here is a pic:

HAJ in PNG 1959

And an album:

HAJ in PNG 1959

More albums can be found here:

XNATMAP - Photos

(Hope I haven't bored you )

However the question still remains - when was the beacon replaced by a cross and by whom?

Ray J. grave

Thanks Fantome.
We moved into the house next door to Betty J. and her 4 girls in '66. My Dad was up there with LM as a radio tech till end of '68. We never really go the full story of the tragedy. I will pass it on to my father and I am sure he will be very interested to read it. We go to know Betty and then her new US husband, Stan R very well. Even went to the wedding ! I was 12. Saw Stan R. and Tom J. both Ex LM pilots, while I was in the USA years later. Sadly, they are both gone now. RIP.
Have great memories of the DCA mob on the compound near Madang airport. My Dad was good mates with a Firey, Tom Gall, who was there then as airport Fire Chief I think. Wonder if anyone knows where he went ?
Really enjoy the postings of PNG in the 60's. Brings back great memories.
Thanks.
C.

Ray J. Grave

Just continuing...
I visited the grave of Pilot Ray J. which is located on Kranket/Graged island in Madang harbor. A very peaceful place. But I wonder what condition the grave is in now ?

I remember the lowering of the Australian flag and raising of the PNG one at independence, at the Arawa sports ground. What great hopes we all had.
