Ronaldsway (iom) foriegn aircraft registration

Just having read that the Isle of man might be setting up it's own aircraft register and the UK's DOT proposing to limit the length of time that foriegn aircraft can stay in the UK . It makes me wonder if the IOM goverment is seeking to expand the amount of aircraft on the island as the IOM has no legal constituitional issues with the UK . Any thoughts?

Yes, one thought.

What is a legal constitutional issue?

Think you are being a little simplistic. The IOM gov has announced it intends to set up a register for private and business jets, not commercial aircraft (but this might come some way down the line). The Iom has a number of legal and constitutional connections with the UK.

The Isle of Man register is not itself a contracting state to the Chicago Convention but is covered by the UK's ratification as it is a dependency of the UK. Any IoM register will therefore be a sub-part of the UK in the same way as the Bermuda and Cayman registers. An Isle of Man register can therefore only be established with the approval of the Department for Transport.

Absolutely true, and the registrations will be in the VP-Ixx sequence apparently.
