Poitiers area in France advice requested please.

Wife and I arrive Poitiers airport 25 September departing 2 October.
We plan on touring around via small hire car and stay in B&B.
Any suggestions on a route or direction to head off too? ie West to La Rochelle or Eastwards.
Any suggestions appreciated from anyone who knows the area.

This might be interest-specific, but you're not too far from Oradour-sur-Glane. The townsfolk were slaughtered during the war and the village has been left pretty much untouched as a memorial. It featured in the opening scenes of the excellent 70's series, The World at War.

Oradour-sur-Glane

Or south to Cognac or north to Tours and the chateaux on the Loire.

We spent some time there in July. We did a hot air balloon ride over the Loire valley.......unbelievable; and very professional. If you're interested post a reply and I'll root out the company's web address.

Thank you gentleman.... both the visit and the Hot Air flight are of interest to us....

Up date
August 26th .
Today I purchased... the Michelin Guide "French Atlantic Coast"
ISBN-13 978-1-906261-17-7
This pocket guide has several recommended tours to be taken by car and also lists walks and recommended accommodations and places to eat.
It would appear to answer my initial post for information.

Cognac and the Atlantic coast would be my choices. La Rochelle, Ile de Re (got an interesting bridge to the island), some good places. Cognac, La R, IdR, easy 3 days spent just on those.

Charente Maritime is a nice departement to visit. Loire Valley Chateaux, do another time and fly direct to Tours in the first place.

Closer to Poitiers is the lovely town of Montmorillion with several fun book and literary shops -and for something completeky different La Valee du Singe -Valley of Monkeys n enchanting sort of zoo-unique as no bars no cages just a lot of monkeys. Sounds childish but adults love it too
