Hi All,

Has any body got any info on Frankfurt - i.e. Where's worth staying, eating, sight seeing etc?

I've got a two night stopover coming up there end of september.

Thanks in advance,

MTJ.

Lots of good eating spots around "Alte Oper", which is part of the old town area. If you have time, drive approx. 40 km west towards the Rhine and head for either Rüdesheim or Assmannshausen for some truly nice landscapes, traditional German hotels and restaurants and local wine.

BTW: Assmannshausen is - despite its name - not a gay hangout

FRA

I would not recommend visiting Rüdesheim or Assmanshausen, i think these towns are touristic rip offs. And the area around the "Alte Oper" is not exactly the old town which doesn't exist anymore (burnt down in an raid in WWII). The bars and restaurants in this area are quite expensive, nevertheless ok for having a drink and for watching people watching people

My recommendations:

down to earth Pubs / Bars: Alt-Sachsenhausen - a lot of traditional restaurants, sports bars, bars, pubs, music pubs... a party area with people from Frankfurt / Germany / eyerywhere...

Berger Straße: Bars, restaurants, pubs, but different from Alt - Sachsenhausen, a little bit more sophisticated, some very nice places!

Sightseeing: visit the tourist info located on a place called "Römer" (it's in the city center near the river), they will provide you with maps and infos in english. And the "Römer" is one of Frankfurt's attractions for sightseeing. Also worth visiting:

Frankfurt am Main

This site is available in english, just click the flag on the homepage. Good for getting an impression how small Frankfurt is - the Maintower

MAIN TOWER

This site is also available in english...

If you want to make a trip to places outside of Frankfurt i would recommend taking the train to Kronberg (S4, takes about 25 minutes) and having a nice walk through the park, the historic old town, visit the castle.

Have a nice trip to germany!

Downtown FRA

A must for crews visiting FRA...

Close to the "HauptBahnhof" (main train station downtown) 15 minutes train ride from airport - go to the "Baseler Eck" restaurant - about 3 blocks away from the station. All crews eat there. Walls covered with decals and pictures of long time gone era, and airlines... Was the PanAm "operations office" from the late 1940s, (Berlin Airlift days) until 1991... Went there last in 2006 again, nothing had changed. Still great food (home style cooking, sauerkraut is excellent, affordable). Enjoy a glass of white Rhein wine, and indulge yourself to a free schnaps after dinner, offered by the owner to aircrews who identify theirselves.

Happy contrails

Had a nice stay at Monkeys Nudelbar, Oeder Weg 2, 60318 Frankfurt, located close to subway station "Eschenheimer Tor".
Good Asian Style food and fair prices.

The Palmengarten is also worth a visit.

Whatever you do, enjoy your stay and have a pleasant time

Al Fakhem?

Ok, my comments on the rhine-area seemed to annoy you, i think that's the reason for your answer to my post. Sorry for that and for being too direct with my opinion, but: There's no need to compare my suggestions with the red light and drug trafficking district of FRA...

On the other hand there are some very nice places to visit on Kaiserstraße: The English Speaking Theatre, some authentic asian restaurants, the street market, the St. Tropez Bar (Football Supporters Bar of SGE)

For dinner go to Sachsenhausen and look for the Schweizer Strasse. Visit, Adolf Wagner, the Gemalten Haus or around the corner the Kannonenstoppel.

Have fun

I'd also stay away from the Kaiserstrasse, specially the lower part towards the Hauptbahnhof and specially at night. No need to visit that unless you're looking for trouble
And although the Rhine river area is very attractive, Rüdesheim and/or Assmannhausen are quite far and far too touristy.
Oppenheim or Nierstein would be more down-to-german-earth. Wiesbaden more attractive.

As for FRA city, Sachsenhausen certainly is attractive with all the aforementioned places and specially the Schweizer Strasse area ( Wagner, Gemaltes Haus, Kannonenstempel), very social, just join a table and feel comfortable with the locals ( many of them coming from elsewhere and working in FRA).

For Shopping, the Zeil is good in large shops while the neighbouring Goethestrasse has the more exclusive and expensive shops. Paralell to the Goethestrasse is the "Fressgass" which is a pedestrian area (like the Zeil itself) and home to Cafes, delis, bars and good for people watching in good weather.

Sandwiched between Goethestrasse and Fressgasse is a small, very narrow lane with good Jazz bars (Jazzhouse and Jazzkeller, the latter offering live jazz).

While the Alte Oper is beatiful and a sight to see, it is certainly not the old town part of FRA. That was destroyed in WW II and is located near the Römer (City Hall). The Römer itself is interesting as part of the old buildings have been re-constructed and there are some art museums.
Walk across the "Eiserner Steg" pedestrian bridge over the Main River into Sachsenhausen from the Römer.

The red light district is in the lower part of Kaiserstrasse and the gay area is behind the Zeil in the Alte Gasse street area.

Close to the Zeil is a very interesting food market, the "Kleinmarkthalle" where you can find anything remotely interesting gastronomic-wise.

Enjoy your stay !

for restaurant I suggest you:

the Ivory Club (Taunusanlage 15 ph. 06977067767), it serve "oriental food" but has very good meats.
If you want to stay outside, try the Mainz area.

A Couple of Places

The Alt-Prague in Sachsenhausen... Great food and try the Budvar on tap.

The Baseler Eck previously mentioned close by the train station. Gert was the owner/head waiter. Really took good care of airline crews. Try the Rouladen
