Take in some of the industrial heritage at the Science and Industry Museum, Castlefields, (30 mins bus/train/tram), experience an authentic Manchester Curry in Rusholmes curry mile (try the Sangam) (30 mins taxi or bus), try the clubs in Manchester (30mins bus/train/tram), or the topless lap dancers at "Totties" Altrincham. (15 mins taxi).
Alternative films are shown at the Cornerhouse (City Centre), thaetrea are nearby, and the local University bar used to have a few good live bands.
If you're after a little more high brow socialising, try the bars in nearby Hale, Alderley Edge or Wilmslow (although Wilmslows gone a bit spit&saw dust recently).
If you fancy a pint of proper beer, try the Chapel House in Mobberley (15 mins taxi).
Stately homes at nearby Dunham/Tatton are worth a peep if that's your thing, Tatton Park's a pretty good walk, (look for the lake) too.
The young ladies scene is probably most dense in the city centre, although expect a different class of chick in the leafy suburbs. Canal Street (City Centre) boasts a thriving gay scene, I'm sure the boy's would be thrilled to see you in your pilots uniform.
'Spose if I had to pick one thing, it'd be to get togged up, get yourself an OS map, and walk around the peaks of Kinder Scout or Mam Tor,(not for pussies,) (40mins by train), followed by a rook of ale in some Manchester Ale House, Jalfreizi in Curry Mile, and a nice relaxing massage (!) at one of the Chorlton Health Clubs.
You want class- come to Manchester
Avoid the Trafford Centre like the plague.
(all times aproximate from Manchester Airport).
Oh yeh, we're famous for a game called "football" too.

Depending what your music knowledge and taste is you can always loose yourself in the Madchester music era and hit the clubs that play it all and have Hacena DJs such as Dave Haslam, playing Tune after tune.
Personally, I've always thought that the best thing to come out of Manchester is the A6. On the other hand, I've always thought that the worst thing to come out of Stockport ( http://www.stockport.gov.uk/content/...ourism/?a=5441 ) is the A6 Northwards.
When are you coming ? Ignore the people slagging off the city, If you have never been before I think you will be pleasantly surprised. It is 3rd most visited city in the UK, so it must be doing something right.
If you like football there is Manchester United, but thats about it.
Few museums if your willing to walk around them. Could catch a bus to the Trafford Center if you fancied some shopping. Hey, you could even take a trip to Moss Side if you want to get robbed!
Unless you have a car and your willing to travel there isn't too much to see here.

Incidently, its actually quite difficult for casual visitors to get tickets for a Man Utd game.
Not really, it depends on the game. If its a big one like Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool etc it's quite hard to find a ticket but for a smaller game you can pick one up easily outside the ground on the day or prior via the ticket office.
If you can't find anything interesting to do in Manchester, then I would follow 777's suggestion and leave.
oldsmithy -the suggestions from gingernut and GBZ show a huge range of things to do. And a load of them ARE accessible by public transport. There are also days out to Liverpool, Chester York etc (1-2 Hours by train).
Correct you may get a ticket for United from outside the ground, but only off a tout and even playing some of the lower teams expect to pay £60 for a £30 ticket, as for a playing a big club look at over £100
If you want to buy a ticket of United themselves, you have to become a member first, unless they go on open sale which is only pre season friendlies normally
There is an interesting event on at the museum of science and industry, all about the human body. Well worth a look, will definately make you think about smoking and drinking seeing some of those organs.
I saw that event on the news mrmagooo, looks interesting.
I'm sure you could find stuff to occupy yourself for a day, but you may struggle for 3 days.
The Lowery center and Imperial War Museum are quite good to spend a few hours of day. Jump on the Metro from town on the Eccles line and it'll bring you up right outside the Lowery.
You could even pop on the train to Liverpool to see the Albert Docks there and go into the maritime museum.
I concur with MAN777, ignore sam the man and his unhelpful streo type casting of what is a great City, full of history, from the Industrial revloution the the redevelopment of castlefield, the bridgewater hall (calssical music concert hall thats is sat on springs to prevent vibrations from passing traffic effecting the music), the pennines are 30 minutes away and are allways pleasing to the eye's, there are plenty of museums, many are free, many theartres. You could take a 20 minute trip to Alderly edge - more milionaires per square mile than anywhere else in the UK and some great houses to see. As MAN777 said, 3rd most visited city so must have something going for it.
It has changed massively SSK, in some parts several times and not always for better. I've been here for as long as you have been away, got here Mar 74. If you want any more on it PM me or email and I'll take it further.
