Grateful for thoughts.

Depends on your tastes! Some of the hotels are a little tired now, but the Equatorial is OK and centrally located. Shangri La is good, and compared to European rates, good value. Quite a lot of new hotels recently opened but never tried them our company only uses those two.

4 nights there will drive you mad though.

Petronas Tower, er, shopping at KLCC, sitting in an interminable traffic jam, er, that's about it.

Despite it being a largely Muslim country, alcohol and naughty night life is abundant. Allegedly.

The Grand Millennium hotel (formerly the Regent hotel) is also quite good with a good location. Shangri La is slightly better in terms of quality.

Nightlife is not too bad - can be pricy though.

A day trip to the Batu caves is worthwhile.

The Lekka Lekka bar in Bukit Bintang - outdoors, great food, great icecreams, good beer and sheeshas.

Well if you are into wild life an afternoon trip up to the elephant sanctuary is a good visit and the KL sea world is quite impressive, there is plenty of choice for eating out in and around K.L at good prices

KL

I stayed at the Nikko Hotel and it was fantastic. Maybe a little pricey but worth the extra. Its only a 10 min walk to the KL Towers and KLCC. Wouldnt recommend walking there at night though.
Taxis should only cost no more than 10 Ringgit (make sure the meter is on) to most parts of the city.
A visit to the Chinese Market is a must for all your knock off watches and designer stuff. Bargains to be had and the clothes arent too bad a quality.
Nightlife is quite lively!! The Beach is the most popular bar with westerners and its got its fair share of 'night fighters'. It even has sharks in a tank above the bar! You will get pestered by the ladies but they are very pretty and willing! (alledgedly).
There are lots of decent restaurants with every imaginable type of cuisine available. I can recommend the revolving restaurant at the top of the television tower (I cant remember its correct name)

Hope this helps

It is called the Restoran Berputar Seri Angkasa. It is on top of the Menara Tower.

When I last went there the food was nothing special, but the views are worthwhile.

Oh yes - - the machinery was obviously a bit iffy that night because the soup had a wave motion on it as the rotation slowed slightly every 4 to 5 seconds - - - - you could feel the hesitation.

Having seen how buildings were put up in KL over about 3 years, we didn't hang around long after eating.

Also in my opinion, KL is one of the best cities for simply sitting and "people watching" in the evening.

i would recommend the shangri-la (2min walk to KLCC) if you want to be close to shopping/clubbing but if you don't mind staying 15mins out of the city centre then the KL hilton would be the best hotel around.

to check out the night scene, head out to Zouk or the Heritage row.

i tried these 3 joints the last time i was there and the food was amazing:
1. bbq pork rice (at tengkat tong shin)
2. fried hokkien noodles (there are too many good stalls to recommend but perhaps you can try the stall at the corner of Jalan Imbi opposite the Honda showroom)
3. 'bak kut teh' (pork in soup) served with rice also around the Jln Imbi area

touristy things to do - snap pictures of the twin towers, go up the sky bridge at klcc, visit kl tower, and shopping!! nothing much to do really..

Kuala Lumpur!
I came here on a 3 month assignment, that was 14 years ago, I never left.
Any thread on KL will highlight the food, I cannot add to that it is simply fantastic, the choice, the flavours and tastes and the price.
There is a Hop On/Hop Off bus operating at RM 38 which is a comfortable i.e. air conditioned, way of seeing the main attractions of KL.
Taxis are cheap and plentiful, just check the meter is on as previously advised and the LRT system is useful between KL Sentral and KLCC. KL Sentral is the main train station with crossovers to the ERL (Airport Express), LRT and Monorail. In fact a return trip on the monorail, terminal to terminal, is a very cool way to see KL, it follows the main streets at an elevation of about 7 metres.
There are plenty of museums, Natural History, National Museum, Telecomms, Science Centre as well as the Butterfly Park.
If you're into serious music the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra is situated within the Twin Towers complex, known as KLCC. Well worth a visit on a Friday or Saturday evening, or Sunday at 3pm.
There are regular headline visitors to the MPO, Harry Connick Jr did a gig there last Monday.
The Esplanade at KLCC is the place for people watching, take your table at 5pm and watch the world go by while enjoying your beverage of choice, Chinoz or the Dome are in the best position. Later at night move to the Hard Rock and watch some different characters, the glitterati as well as the working girls and look out for those who aren't what they appear to be.
A word of warning, bag snatching is rife, every one has a story to tell of motorcyclists making off with their bag, which means 'bye 'bye to passport, credit cards, hotel key and passport and hello to hassle and frustration.
An interesting day out is take a commuter train (KTMKomuter from KL Sentral) to Port Klang and catch the ferry to Crab Island (Pulau Ketam). The commuter runs every 15 minutes and will drop you at the ferry terminal. Crab Island is built on stilts and survives on the fishing industry, there are plenty of locals willing to guide you and walk you round the Island, highly recommended. Needless to say it is all very cheap.
For a thrill ride take a helicopter from Subang airport and do the tourist trail across mountains lakes and jungle and of course flying around the Petronas Twin Towers and the KL Tower at 500 feet. Been there done that....many times. Will take about about 40 minutes and cost RM 1500.
The temperature is 32°C everyday with humidity at 85%, however when the humidity drops and the sun comes out expect 38°C hence the need for air conditioning.
Hope this helps.

The Renaissance Hotel is really nice and has a great location. It has the best breakfast buffet I've ever had!

If you're interested in seeing the city then I recommend buying the Lonely Planet guide and doing some of the walking tours. The Colonial District walk is really nice and you get to see some of the best buildings.

What to do in KL?

If you fancy a step back in time then go to the Coliseum for a steak (on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman) - this was a famous watering hole for planters and servicemen during the colonial era.
If you want to lose some weight (and then gain it back quickly) you can run with the Hash House Harriers. Saturday hash is recommended <www.ph3.org> and you can normally get a lift with someone if you are not sure where to go. The hash will run in rubber and oil palm estates and also light jungle. There is not much virgin jungle left in the Klang Valley - however there is the Forest research institute (called FRIM) which is about 30 mins by taxi from KLCC - this is virgin rainforest and there is also a canopy walk
The old airport (not Subang but Sungai Besi) has a collection of vintage RMAF aircraft - its a pity those on display outside are rotting away due ingress of water - most of the cockpits have missing glazing.(Note : closed on Fridays).
If you have family in tow then the butterfly park and orchid farm in the Lake Gardens is relaxing and quite shady.
As mentioned on the previous posts food is in abundance in KL - you may come across durian and belacan - you will either love it or hate it!
Be firm with KL taxis and make sure they use the meters - there are plenty around so choose another taxi if the driver refuses to use the meter.

We stayed at the Shangri La, very nice, very central.
If the KLCC is too expensive for you , try down the China town market!
Dinner at the revolving restaurant at the top of the KL tower was great. Maybe not the cheapest, but tasty and we went in the evening, the city by lights is amazing and the best view ever of the Petronas towers all lit up!!

Thanxs for the latest replies guys. Am actually looking forward to it. Must see the aircraft museum and the helicopter ride sounds like fun.

Eating house tips greatfully received and I shall try them all....well those I am allowed to try!

It really does make a change going somewhere I have never been before and it does look as if everyone has something positive to say about KL - shall remember the tip on bag snatching tho!
