Where to live for London City?

Having not spent a lot of time in London I would appreciate some advice on the best locations to live for a painless commute to City Airport, if such a thing exists!

Preferably not in the city, as I'm not so keen to go back to living in an apartment and commutable within an hour.

Many thanks.

AP

E14 postcode (Isle of Dogs) is just around the corner. Out of the city altogether. On the DLR line, you will need to change once but its literally hop off one, wait for another which is usually 5 mins max, normally less.

I lived there for about a year. Contact http://www.niceroom.co.uk/. They have lots of modern house-shares around that area and others, fairly reasonably priced for london too I found. I spent/wasted a lot of time looking for somewhere decent to live in london. I really got very sick and tired of looking at some really expensive sh1t holes!

Although try gumtree.co.uk too, depending on your budget you can get some nice placed there too (beware of the sh1t holes on that site though!! )

I used to work near LCY, and I lived out in Essex. Now that the A13 has been 'improved', live outside the M25 to the East and you'll do it easily in an hour. (but know the 'short cuts' if theres a jam!)

Are you thinking about public transport to the airport?

Assuming you are then, as platinum says the Isle of Dogs is ideal. Beware of grotty areas though, there's still a lot of crime on the Island and there's an interesting juxtaposition between the extreme wealth of Canary Wharf and some of the poverty right next door to it.

I live just over the river In Greenwich and have a 25 minute commute to the Wharf. If cash is a problem, think about Woolwich. It's cheaper, both to buy and rent, although there are estates etc best avoided. But transport links are good and will be even better in a few years as the DLR is going to open there

Hi. I live in Lewisham. It is at the end of the DLR, so commuting into LCY is no problem at all. It is aslo a bit cheaper than Greenwich. As with all areas, there are good and bad parts, but within 5 mins walk from the station, there are some very nice places. I've been here for 15 years and it has all been good!
