Just got back last week. Stayed in Wenceslas Square In Hotel Jalta...faultless..clean and friendly!! However that area is the "New town" and reminds me of Oxford street a little..but only 5 minute walk to the old town where you can find a beautiful old town sqaure accomponied by the astronomical clock which is quite funny! just stay away from the cafes there as they rip you off tenfold! Further more theres charles bridge, opera house, palace and a boat trip...great place to go for a short city break...!!
I also used to live there, what exactly are u looking for?? drinking, dining, operas, clubs, hotel, aiport transport..(i've got a nice private hire mercedes guy who is cheaper than the airport taxis if u want it..!!!) prague is not as cheap as it used to be.. !!!
Stayed at Hotel Elite few years ago, near to a Tesco store. Hotel was fine and the prices in the Tesco shop cheap. (Ideal for stocking up with supplies for the days tour).
Haven't been there since the mid 1990's. Had dinner outdoors by the bridge across from the white castle. The students were playing their violins and cellos. The ladies were lovely (really!). The beer was great. Got lost walking back to the hotel - really lost! What fun.
My favourite restaurant to take a lady was Le Saint Jacques http://www.saint-jacques.cz/ just off old town square (Staromatska Namesti) on Jakubska, check if the violinist and pianist are playing,, if its snowing finish off with coffee and Jagermeister at Caffreys on the square,, if u want to play around with some different beers hit Pivovarsky Dum on Jecna, try the pork with horse radish and hve chocolate beer.. alternatively just wander in the centre, its a truly great city
Location: a green and pleasant land.......sometimes

i came back yesterday. All the posts are right, i stayed on the other side of the river (the castle side), less than five mins walk from charles bridge. There are some good bars around there (try St nicks) that are far better value beer wise than on the old town square. One of the cleanest places i have been to.....enjoy
Snapper, depends on how much time you get there, however I second Andy's opinion re the Hotel Jalta - very modern, funky and in the middle of Wencelas Square, however as it was on the company tab, I can't help you re dollars.
As far as having several days I'd give the following as must do in Prague itself: * Ride the trams all through the city to appreciate the architecture and the beauty of the city itself * To get a birds eye view, ride the tram to the bottom of Petrin Hill - catch the incline railway up to the top then climb the tower for a magnificent view ( Prague's version of the Eiffel Tower - minus the height and more importantly, minus the French!) Google it! * Get the tram over the river and up to Prague Castle and wander the grounds of the Castle and the Cathederal * Wander over the Charles Bridge. When over the bridge, on the Castle side of the river, below the bridge on the bank, there are a few rather wonderful alehouses to sit at, watch the river meander by while partaking in some of the world's best pilseners * Visit the Jewish quarter for some of the most amazing preserved buildings - the entire sector is intact and one can sit and drink coffee while sucking up the atmosphere
If you have a spare day to venture elsewhere, get the bus out to Terezin - about 1 hour north of Prague. Google this one too. It was a town taken over by the Nazis and used as a camp for Czech Jews before they were sent to the infamous death camps. The entire town has been preserved as a living monument and the camp is a living museum to the past. In all my travels this is would be the most moving, emotional place I have been. Not exactly 'fun' tourism but one of the most powerful places to go.
A colleague went to the famous ossuaries at Kutna Hora ( 1 hour east of Prague) and also raved about them.
And remember the best beers in the world at comparitively ridiculous prices, and arguably, some of the most beautiful women in the world!
Couple of weeks ago we stayed in Central Hotel, because it was, er, central. Not too expensive, good beer and breakfast, two minutes stroll from old town square, couldn't fault it. Just around the corner, if you like blues, good bar with excellent live music and good food and beer.
Minibus tour from corner of old town square gives a good orientation in a short time - about 90 minutes.
Nobody ever tells you about the television tower, we didn't find out until just before we left, looks to be a fantaastic viewing platform if that turns you on, a bit out of the main area, about a fiver to go up, I will deffo be trying it next time we go - yes we liked the place so much we will be going again for sure.
Nobody tells you what the big waving arm is on the castle side of the river on top of the hill looking northwards, looks like a giant metronome, not in the guide books we had - well it is a giant metronome, put there as a mobile sculpture.
Don't agree about the cafes, try Cafe Louvre (Google it), it's on Narodni which runs across bottom of Wenc Sq. They even have a Guardian in circulation, OK European Edition. Also try to find Zombie Bar off Wenc Sq. about halfway up on left, If they don't have a spirit its not made.
