Fg Off Tim McElhaw

Early in March Tim McElhaw died in a Florida nursing home aged 91.

On 22 May 1948 Fg Off Tim McElhaw flying an RAF Spitfire FR18 shot down a Royal Egyptian Air Force Spitfire LF9 whilst it was attacking RAF Ramat David in Palestine.

Time McElhaw is still the last RAF pilot in an RAF aircraft to shoot down another aircraft in a contested air-to-air engagement.

Tim was my boss on 14 Sqn (Canberra B(I)8) RAF Wildenrath in the late 60s. Long time ago, but I do recall him as a fine Boss.

There is a War Museum recording of his career and exploits in the Middle East as a young flying officer in 1948; his posting to Korea; flying the Hunter and Canberra.
