Yes, 3 active squadrons (hikotai) and a test squadron flying the F-4EJ/F-4EJ Kai/RF-4E Kai and RF-4EJ Kai, although 302 Hikotai, which was involved in this incident, is due to relinquish their F-4EJ Kai's next year for you know what...
301 and 501 Hikotai then last a while longer as does the Hiko Kaihatsu Jikken Dan (ADTW) test squadron.

"The fire, which started at around 11:45 a.m. local time at the ASDF's Hyakuri Air Base, was extinguished by rescue personnel about 30 minutes later, ASDF officials said."

30 mins!

Thanks, CK...

How do I know all this stuff? Well, what some may consider an unhealthy obsession with all things F-4, mainly thanks to an uncle sitting me by the fence at Coningsby from the age of about 5, a well stocked F-4 'library' and access to several good online resources, a couple of online friends are also far more knowledgeable than me and are an invaluable source of 'brain picking' when info is not readily available...

A video link to Japanese F4's. May have been from a previous thread so it may not be new to everyone.

I sure hope you have the Milviz F4 for a certain pc flying game then. Especially with it's rich collection of bombing modes.

I'm sure the crew did the right thing in getting out as quickly as possible!

Great video-is it me or are they not as 'smoky' as some? Different powerplant? I remember the Luftwaffe tooms from JG71 being real smokers?

Unusual headline on the second link, ".......catches fire before take off". I'm pretty sure it didn't take off after it caught fire!

JASDF F-4s use a license built version of the J79-GE-17, in the late 70s early 80s, a smokeless mod was introduced for the -10 (USN/USMC only) -15 (USAF only) and -17 (USAF and foreign operators). The Luftwaffe F-4F/RF-4E also had license built versions of the -17 but, the smokeless mod was a 'war only' option to reduce the increased engine wear associated with the smokeless mod (higher combustion/exhaust temperature).
