Personality and Fatigue

Good afternoon everybody. I am a regular Fleet Air Arm aviator and on the side I am studying for a degree in Psychology with The Open University in preparation, perhaps, for a job in CRM when I finally leave. As part of my final year module I have put together a study that investigates the relationship between personality and fatigue; 2 areas that will be if interest to anybody involved in aviation. I need as many participants as possible, and as you are my target audience it would be great if you could participate.

The survey details, including privacy, are explained at the beginning of the web page, which is hosted by Qualtrics, an online survey host.

Thanks in advance and please find the link below.

An interesting topic from my POV. I am compulsively idle, and yet can endure considerable fatigue under the right circumstances. Yesterday evening I completed a 24+ hour non-stop 4-sector flight home with few ill effects: my record is 30 hours/5 sectors from Hawaii

Heading for the survey!

Edit = interesting!

I remember being on one of those big exercises in the 70s - called High Wood as I recall. We were all given questionnaires to fill in as the exercise progressed and one of the sections was how you were feeling on an hour by hour basis. One of the possibilities to tick was "lethargic, bored". This entered our "squadronspeak", and for years afterwards the question "How are you?" would get the reply "lethargic, bored"!

Good luck with the survey.

Simon,

I've just done the survey. Very interesting.

I see the personality survey has the usual duplication of questions with slightly different wording. How do you handle things when the answers are inconsistent?

The tiredness questions I found odd in that everything was compared to "usual". That presumably is different for each person.

Will you post a summary of the results?

These days on ops and exercises the SH world do surveys of other people's fatigue - the theory being that you're worst place to rate yourself. So you give all your mukkas a score of 1-10.

My personal record is 38 hours. Operating a HKG-KIX-HKG freight sector and then deadheading back to MAN via BKK and DXB. I shall also be heading for the survey.

For clarity I should mention that I was not 'operating', but relaxing in First or Business seats. "Another Vodka and Tonic, please"

Hi virtualA1.
I am afraid a 10 minute survey with reference to "fatigue" covering all aspects of flying won't even get you past the intro. Sorry.
