Bell-Boeing begins designing CMV-22B with $151 million

Based on the US Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey variant, the navy’s “CMV” tiltrotor will come equipped with extra fuel bladders to extend its range from 860nm to approximately 1,150nm.
That’s the most significant engineering challenge, but the service also requires a beyond line-of-sight radio and public address system so that crews can communicate en route to the aircraft carrier's deck, or between other ships in the battle group.
More than 70% of the work will be done in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where Boeing fabricates composite V-22 airframes. Another 20% will be completed at Bell’s facility in Fort Worth, Texas.
Just $15 million has been obligated at the time of the award, and work is expected to continue through September 2020. By that time, the first of 44 CMV-22B aircraft, which will be ordered in 2018, will begin delivered from Bell’s final assembly and checkout facility in Amarillo.

On 31 March, US Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) announced the $151 million contract with Bell Helicopter and Boeing's joint V-22 programme office in Amarillo, Texas, which covers "non-recurring engineering services associated with the development of the capability for the Navy variant of the V-22”. NAVAIR confirmed that it covers the design changes for all three modifications, including the extended-range fuel system.More than 70% of the work will be done in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where Boeing fabricates composite V-22 airframes. US Navy to replace Greyhounds with Ospreys in Japan | IHS Jane's 360
The United States Navy (USN) is to deploy the CMV-22B version of the Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft to Japan from 2021 to replace its outdated C-2 Greyhounds, Kyodo news agency reported on 30 August.
The USN Greyhounds are currently based at the Naval Air Facility Atsugi, west of Tokyo, but are attached to the USS Ronald Reagan , which has its home port at Yokosuka.
The CMV-22B version of the Osprey has additional fuel tanks that enable it to conduct cargo resupply operations for carrier groups. The aircraft are expected to be based at the US Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni.

Close to $1B of US taxpayer money was spent for 12 MV-22's just to shuttle federal bureaucrats around.
MG: Oooh, looks like good timing for a certain large ship(s) in the UK!
Agree!
Thought they would have stuck with the HV-22 designation, I thought two was the max amount of letters used in the US designation system. CVM does not quite roll off the tounge- no doubt will get a less glamorous nickname...
Thinks she will prove quite handy, but expensive, in the COD role.
BLOS radio. Get in there MoD! Flog them the kit we put in storage nearly 30 years ago.
Or just offer them the BLOS kit based on the Iridium Satphone the UK has been using in recent years.

They would be a handy addition to the Carrier arsenal, but with more Chinooks than we can shake a stick at, and the Navy awash with EH101s, what would be the justification?
