Well, we 'always' were. The questions remain how many and over what timescale, other than 24 by 2023. Can't say I expect too much detail in the near future, but will be happy if there is.

To sustain 24 on a carrier in 2023, the UK may need more than 24 to achieve this. I'm sure better numbers giving the yearly buys, will be released in time.

@Rhino

Why is it a wind up right?

Hmm? It would not seem such a wind up if you drank less beer - (that was a wind up "burp, hic"

I would suggest that he thinks the thread is a wind up because the UK has a long history of buying the F-35 and there is a very, very, very long thread already on here all about it already.

Spot on, WhiteOvies...

Natstrackalpha, it's not like it was just revealed yesterday, the UK has been involved with the whole JSF boondoggle since it started in earnest with the JSF competition back in the mid 90's! Are you seriously saying yesterdays announcement of how many we're (allegedly) getting is the first you've heard of it?!

Well, . . . ? . . . anyway, we should get a load of F18s.

I`ve not been on pprune for yonks and the F-35 is not exactly hot news on the - street - Beeb or any other channel, least, av not seen any. If it wasn't for that internet report".

I should have read the other posts on the F35 - all I saw, at a glance, was F35 Cancelled . . .couple that with my new found knowledge of the F 35 - wow! bonza scoop! No to be. Crashed and burned. Sorry. Am four million years old, whaddaya expect?

Your truly,

A Fossil.

(sorry about the beer)

Nats,

The F-35 Cancelled thread runs pretty much through all of the ups and down, highs and lows etc. of the UK (plus occassionally others) procurement of the F-35, starting from when cancellation looked iminent to the much happier place where we are today (some may debate the level of happiness!).

It includes all the arguments, several times over, of the VSTOL vs conventional carrier debate and hence the jet choice including much debate about F-35B vs F-18E/F, Rafale, Sea Gripen, F-35C, Sea Typhoon etc.

It's a long read, good luck, but you might end up with a better understanding of the back story. Just ignore all the personal jibes and twisted logic and do your best to pick out the good info and genuine discussion that it contains. As a heads up the regular posters can be divided into those who are vehemently against, those who are vehemently for, those who wait to be convinced. All have some knowledge of differing levels and veracity and lots of opinions!
