Prestwick and MPA

TOFO

I was part of Prestwick Grade 1 diversion to Prestwick. A memorable night down town in flying kit with a film crew picking up the tab! Ring a bell or another time?

I remember queuing at an ATM in Prestwick for beer chits, whilst wearing the green dancing suit. I think it was a good night.

So Atomkraft, let me get this right you would like a new MPA over spending money on the NHS??
If, as it had been suggested, the UK had introduced an NHS type system in the 1930's.

The UK would have had the best health system in the Third Reich.

Now it's Typhoons back to Leuchars!

Today's nonsense in the Courier that I chuckled over whilst eating my porage.

Typhoons (That have been mothballed since 2011) could be back at Leuchars in response to the increase in Russian bomber flights. Includes quote from local MP saying they should never have mothballed Typhoon in the first place.

MoD sinks £2bn sub-hunter jet deal...

IF this article turns out to be true, then the MOD and government all need f**king with a ragman's trumpet!

I don't want to jump the gun in respect to the SDSR, and this is just my opinion, but I highly suspect that article is bs for several reasons; firstly given the commitment to the 2% of GDP, there should *theoretically* be enough money (but that's debatable), and more importantly the MOD released this statement in the defence news today regarding the Times' speculation as to an MPA contract - "The MOD continues to assess future requirements as part of the work we are doing on the Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR). No decisions have been taken"

Well they would say that, wouldn't they? They were hardly likely to come out and confirm the 'story'!

Does it not depend on what the actual outcome of binning the P8 actually means? For example, if they've decided that the P1 is in fact the better solution for the task and british industry, then I'd actually suggest it's quite an astute decision.

If that proves to be the case, then it may well be a wise decision, however, 'wise decision' and MOD/Government tend not to sit well together in the same sentence!

Would Leemings runway be suitable. It has lots of infrastructure and accommodation having in the recent past housed three f3 sqns.

Totally agree. Maybe we've reached a watershed moment?

Add an 'armed forces' before MOD - the way elements of the military pretend they're nothing to do with the MOD is arguably part of the problem.

Don't forget that there are other alternatives in play aside from P1 - eg the Sea Albert that would utilise airframes and infrastructure that we already possess, not to mention the "promise" that it would be both cheaper and have more UK content. Would it / could it meet our requirement?

Or would any shortfall cf P8 performance represent that part of the performance needed to tackle the latest SSNs and SSKs?

The infrastructure and operations buildings required for operating MPA is not the same as that for operating fast jets.

Wouldn't transit times be an issue with Sea Albert, in fact any turboprop based alternative?
